Univega Via Carisma Hybrid

I need help from hybrid experts.....

I've been keeping an eye out for an older steel hybrid with front low rider mounts to use as a trail tourer. I've not found many with the braze ons or in my size and they have been kind of pricey for an N+1 bike.

I don't know the year but I found one that it is kind of a magenta red fade to silver in the back with rapid fire shifters. It is for sale from a shop and has been tuned up.

Is $150 a decent price for the bike and could I generally expect a profit if I was to flip it later? The second part of the question needs to be a yes to justify another bike with my wife :-)

The Via Carisma fluctuated a bit depending on the exact year but based on the Rapid-Fire, it sounds like the circa 1991/1992 models which were 500LX and CX equipped. Original price was $425-$450 US.

LBS typically price on the high side and have a pretty good understanding of the local markets. $150, tuned up doesn;t sound unreasonable for an LBS. If there was more profit to be made, the LBS would take it, so I doubt whether you could flip it later for a profit.

BF member EjustE had one set up as a tourer. It was actually a pretty nice set up for the price. I don't think he is around anymore, but you can search some of his posts in C&V for it.

Here's a picture.

Flip potential? Zip. As an end user price is OK, and priced at full market. Older hydrids get very little respect, which is great as a buyer, not so hot when it comes to selling.

I've purchased 4 low end Trek 700 hybrids over the years for pretty cheap (under $50) at garage sales in the past. After overhauls three have been given away to familiy members and I will have my first to try and sell this spring so I'll probably experience the lack of respect from that side.

What I find odd is that the upper end hybrids like the Trek 750 seem rare and are usually priced as such when I see one. Is it my area or are they kind of rare all over? Have the original owners not yet reached the point of wanting to get rid of them like many old road bike owners?

I really don't "need" the bike that bad and am hesitant to pay the $150 but I'm afraid it could be a long time before I stumble on one that fits my criteria.

Badger Biker,
I can't send a PM yet so I need to post this here.
I have a 93 Via De Oro that I plan to post on CL in the spring. I am in the Twin Cities area.
It is a notch or two up from the Via Charisma.

If you have any interest please e-mail me at lmmaynard@msn.com
thanks
Matt

I may work a deal to trade an overhauled and set to sell Trek 700 (late 90's) that I have plus $45 for the Univega. I looked at the Univega and it is in comparable shape to my Trek and needs no work. The Univega has Rapid Fire shifters instead of twist grips and it has oval tubing so I'm guessing it may be a bit lighter.

Good deal or not??

I just sold a Via Carisma for $120.00. It was a frame-up refurbish with new tire, tubes, and seat. Picked it up for $25.00 needing work. Hybrids don't command big bucks, but they are steady sellers. Didn't make enough on this one too justify it. The absolute most I could have gotten for it was about $140-$150. Good bike. Too small for me.
