A couple of older road bikes in middle TN...

First of is a Cannondale R200, 56cm aluminum frame w/ steel fork, Ultegra and Tiagra components. Not much more info than that, but the seller wants $300.

The second one is a 1985 Trek 560 racing bike w/ 56cm lugged steel frame, new tires, a complete re-greasing of the hubs, headset, and bottom bracket. Lots of good pics in the ad. Seller wants $370 for it.

Both these bikes have been for sale on my local CL for awhile. I'd like to find another road bike in that price range, but I have to say that I was spoiled by my $60 1993 Giant Perigee CL find a few years ago. If they are high, what is a ballpark price for bikes like these? I know next to nothing about classic road bikes, except that I want one.

I think I'd check out the R200. It sounds like a newer bike if it has Ultegra/Tiagra which might make it late 90's with brake shifters. If this is true, it's a much better value than the Trek. Unless it's mint, an 85 560 would sell 275-325 in my neighborhood.

I probably wouldn't go more than $300 on the 560. The overhaul makes it worth it, but there is some light rust on the chrome and scratches and oxidation on the aluminum bits. Still, Suntour Cyclone is nice stuff.

The Cannondale is a late 90's frame. Sounds like it's been upgraded to at least 9 speed (was the Ultegra name is use during the 8 speed era?). Depends on the condition, I suppose, but mismatched crank arms? Sounds like it's been ridden hard based on the seller's description. I'd be tempted to offer something closer to $200, unless it's in better shape than I think.

Here's the spec on the green '98 R200: http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/B...R200&Type=bike

After the Prelude vs 560 thread in the main forum, I think anything above the low, maybe mid $200s is overvalued for a 1985.

501 doesn't carry the valuation boost of 531, and 1985 is when they switched to a single piece cast head tube, which rubs me the wrong way even on the off chance it's for the better.

There are some pretty nice bikes valued in the $300 range, and I don't think this deserves to be one of them.

Hmm......

Much to think about.

Thanks for the info!!

Silly price on the Trek, I would pass. The Cannondale could be a good deal, depends what it looks like in person.

I think Junkyardbike hit it on the head.
I wouldn't give that much for the 560 unless it was overhauled AND minty: Pass (for once Thrifty Bill and I agree on a Trek!)
- but I would not give the full asking price on the 'dale either.

I think I'll pass on both...

Thanks!!
