Mid 80s celeste Bianchi Alloro trade-in value??

Hi all.
So I have a 1985 (I think) Bianchi Alloro in celeste. Columbus tubing. Made In Italy. Pretty sure all parts are original except the Mavic rims and pedals.

Now, I know its ABSOLUTELY FILTHY:


with Campy Nuovo derailleurs (again, filthy):



OK, so assuming this will clean up nicely to a solid "good" condition (maybe better) with light marks, decal wear, etc..:

anybody know what a respectable trade offer would be?

I would like to get a hybrid style bike for the Phoenix area, something off road and on. I'd like to trade this in.

What offers should I expect?

I personally don't know of any shops that do "trade-ins". I'm sure there are some, just never seen any. I have seen used bikes for sale at some shops, but I think they were consignment deals.

At any rate, the bike should clean up very well and have a nice value to it. I think you'd do better on Craigslist or if you have time and the inclination, Ebay.

Bianchigirll and others can chime in on value better than I can. I don't know Bianchis, but I'd offer $300 for it myself.

Trade in? You are not going to get much, unless they inflate the price of the hybrid. MUCH better off cleaning it up and selling it, then buying the hybri of your dreams, and pocketing quite a bit of coin.

if you were to take the time to clean this very good, it is possible it might bid over $300 on ebay but it would have to be very clean

can you tell me a bit more about the bike? is there a model or maker name on tha backside of the cranks? model on the Modolo Brakes? what about the headset, seatpost, handlebars and stem. what does the tubing decal have on it, could you post a pic of it?

what size is the frame?

Yes, cleaned up really well, I would not be surprised to see it go for over $300. As is, a small fraction, as buyers do not have imagination. Cleanup will not cost much, just some time with a tooth brush, etc.

As far as a hybrid, used hybrids are cheap, you should be able to find one for aroun $100.

i know what you mean, but it might be the opposite.. buyers see dirt and grime and imagine the worst

I think the fact that it is tall might make it harder to sell, but I bet I could sell that bike for over $300 in my market if i were patient. I don't know a lot about the components but you have desirable brand names and colors in your favor

it is an '85 Alloro, Columbus TreTubi chromoly doublebutt frame, Falck fork with froged crown.

Headset; Ofmea
Brakes; Modolo Sporting
cranks; ofmega competition
FW; Regina Corse

shift/derailleurs; Campi Gran Sport
Hubs; Ofmega
Rims; Mavic Mod 2

nice upper midrange package, it is what I/We would call a "entry level racing bike" a great beginners bike in the mid to late '80s. but I do a gree really cleaned up and presented well on ebay it may being $300. the missing hoods and the taller size may detract somewhat but still a nice daily rider. personally I would do the carwash deal with it, the wax the frame and maybe ebay it.

OH I see you have the pump that came with it that will help alot, the bottle cage looks original too.

Hi Bianchigirl!

Here's some info:
backside of cranks ----170 Strada
Modolo brakes model ---- Sporting
headset ---- no idea
seatpost ---- Brev (? thats all I could see)
stem ---- Cinelli
handlebars ---- 3 ttt Grand Prix (made in Italy)
Columbus tubing ---- Tretubi (the decal is torn down the middle)


I don't know the frame size, but I know its tall. I'm 6'4 and its big enough for me, and I think it would be fine for someone taller.

Long time no talk!

So I got this Bianchi the Gold Tune-Up at Rei, and it rides great. New tires and chain.

But now I can't decide if I want to sell it and get the following new hybrid (I guess this choice is called an "endurance" bike, under "road" bike.)
Rei has this one on clearance:

It has road components.

Retail $850, now $550. That's a big discount.

Can anyone talk me into keeping the Bianchi and skipping the Novara?
The Novara is def more of an 'all-in-one' bike, (which often times equates to 'nothing well'?)

Maybe I should keep the Bianchi for roads, and get a MTN bike for trails?

I should mention I live in Phoenix, so basically spread out city riding.

If your Bianchi is that nice, you may regret selling it. Why don't you get a used Novara on CL. You can pick one up like I did for 350.00. The bike was 2 years old and in excellent condition. Retail was 950.00

Because I need an XL, and those don't turn up that often.
And $850 to $550 is pretty nice for new.

Here the Bianchi:

I did get celeste tape to put on. I'll need new handle bars as these are a little narrow.
Of course it's XL, so it may be hard to sell.

I collect enough stuff, I don't need to start collecting bikes in my apartment lol.

The more I think about it, after looking at CL, I could always wait and find some used MTB for trails and stuff for under $300 and just keep both. The Bianchi isn't gonna lose value any time soon (not that it's a huge collectors item now). But it might be fun to sit tight, keep an eye on CL for a used MTB my size, and go from there.

Yes she cleaned up nice and I'm glad you've enjoyed that bike. I also think you'd ultimately regret selling that one to get a pretty generic mass market bike.

But I don't need it, really.
It's a "neat" bike for sure, but I don't know if I want to be riding this around town.
Would you guys use this as your everyday, all use bike?
I need something practical, and good for a lot of the dirt around here.


I'll keep my eyes on CL, but it's not easy finding an XL used bike.

I would figure out the widest tire it will take, chuck a rack on the back and you have your hybrid. If you have been riding it as is for five years you obviously have no issue with drop bars. Get a different stem if you need a more upright riding position. Modern hybrids are devoid of character.

OK now since I'm going to keep it, I have another question.
Is it bad if I want to change out the handlebars?
The ones on are probably 38-40cm,
and I'm a tall drink of water and broad, so I'd like 44cm, and not as low as a drop either.

With these vintage bikes, is it not a good idea to change out original parts?
Is that like, sacrilegious?
Or, will I even notice much difference?
Or am I totally over-thinking it? Haha.

...your bike is a tres tubi Bianchi with Gran Sport components. I have one that has been upgraded a little bit to Record derailleurs, and while it's a fine bicycle, it's far from the best that Bianchi made and sold. Not the worst either, but about middle of the range somewhere.

So I don't have much trouble in riding mine around town if I feel like it, but I do cable the wheels if I have to lock it up somewhere, and don't lock it for all that long. Almost any bike that rolls gets stolen here, and anything like wheels with QR have a bad history of vanishing if you're gone long.

Anyway, changing out bar and stem to make them fit my needs is standard procedure for me.But I'm often horrified when people do a bar swap at what they choose as the replacement. Change the fit, but try not to go ergo bar or some godawful Profile stem from the late 90's.

Soma Highway 1 bars are shallow and come in a 26.0 diameter, which should fit your current stem.

Or you can find a stem with a bit of a rise to it and keep your current bars.

I'd also suggest you find some brake hoods, it can't be too comfy riding the hoods as it is now.

So you don't think I'll be able to keep my current stem with many different new handlebars?
How can you tell what will only fit my current stem?

Yes to the brake hoods.

And I don't think the rise is a concern, but the width of these handlebars.
If I'm to listen to all the info on handlebar width fit, these are too narrow for my shoulders.
