Miele Gara Road Issue - Value?

My friend is selling his Miele Gara Road Issue Road Bike and I was wondering if anyone could help me determine the value of it. Also, any info about the bike year and components would be nice.

I have been riding mountain bikes for years, but don't know much about Road Bikes. A group of my friends have recently started riding in a group at night and I want to join them. Instead of buying a new entry level road bike I was thinking about getting something used and fix it up. He wants $500 for it, but that seems a little high to me.

I'm going to attempt to post some pictures of the bike.

I'm 6'2" and weigh about 200lbs [not sure if that info helps]

I have owned and ridden lots of Miele bicycles and still own one of the top of the line models, Miele #17.

The Gara is a pretty nice bicycle and I would not hesitate to ask $500.00 for such a bicycle. In fact, I would ask considerably more but that is just me. You can get an understanding of how to determine Vintage Bicycle Value by reading through the article. That said...

For $500.00 you should be able to find something just as nice or a lot nicer. Finding Vintage Bicycles is not all that difficult to do. I advise that you use the Word of Mouth method to find one. This works very well at first.

I do hope this is a help and welcome to the world of vintage bicycles.

Hi, I'm a new member and just came across this thread. I have a Miele Gara Road Issue bike as well, with all of the original components. It looks very similar to the pictures posted above, although mine has not yet been cleaned up (needs a new chain, tires, basic tune-up; some scratches from moving & use, but only cosmetic). I would like to sell this bike because it's just a tad too large for me, making my ride unbalanced & more strenuous than necessary. I've checked various Craigslist postings around the USA and Canada, only to find no listings or very few listings with a wide range of selling prices (mainly in the Toronto area).

Does anyone have more information on the value of this bike in the West Coast market? It seems to be an extremely well made bike, though definitely outdated for top quality. I'm not into the vintage bike scene, and would love to sell this bike to someone who may have a fondness for older road bikes &/or Miele's. Any help will be greatly appreciated, ie - if you sold one recently, what did it sell for? If you are in the market to buy one, what would you be willing to pay?

I noticed also a conversation about the serial numbers for the Miele bike's (the lack thereof). Anybody interested in collecting data from mine?

Thank you for the help and sharing your knowledge with a newbie!

Don't waste time looking for sales data for the exact model. Instead, look at similar bikes, with similar quality tubing, similar components, etc. Pretty much all the manufacturers bought parts from the same suppliers. At most, the only thing Miele built was the frame, and they bought the tubing from someone else.

I don't see much interest in the US for Miele bikes. Its a Canadian brand that gets a lot more love in Canada. Go to one of the Craigs List search engines, watch your local C/L for activity.

And a good portion of the value is how good of a job you do preparing and marketing the bike. Most bikes sell for less than market value for those two reasons. Its pretty hard to get full market on a bike.

If you want someone to take a stab at the value of your bike, post pictures of it, AFTER you have done the prep work. Those pictures will be required to sell it anyway.

Thank you! I appreciate the quick response - your advice matched my instincts. The bike is going up to a shop tomorrow for a revamp and some TLC.
