Very Old Rudge

Hi,

I have an old Rudge bicycle that I have been trying to do some research on. It’s a gents bike with; 28” wheels, rod brakes, Dunlop saddle, single speed and the seat stays are bolted on. Also has a painted/ transfer head badge, this makes me think it is very old or possibly a war date.

I think some components have been changed at some point. As the two pedals don’t match. The rear wheel is a “Ridga” rim and “Pelissier” hub both made in France and the front has no make on anything and also the mud guards as the rear has a reflector with 1961 on them I really think the bike is older.

I can’t find a frame number I have looked over it but couldn’t see anything.
If there’s any info you can give me or if you can guest what era it is that would be great.

I have up loaded some photos at

many thanks.

Hi darrenjs92ni -

That is an impressive ride, and I think it's quite old. - Certainly prewar and I am thinking 20's, given the bolt on stays, rearward facing DO.

- But I'm not the expert - There are probably some folks who could give you more authoritative answers here.
What I can say for sure, is that you have a really a fab Rudge Roadster there!

Seems similar to mine, other than the full chain case and saddle. Best I can tell mine is a 1951 model year. Look for a serial number on the left side of the seat lug.

My thread with more info.

A little more digging here, and my guess is that yours is a Tourist model -
Here is an axample from the 54 catalog - to my chagrin it still has the bolt-on stays!

- I have never seen a "7" seat post like yours on anything but a prewar bike though.

Thanks for the replies, sorry about not getting back sooner. Does anyone have a clue how much the bike is worth? I don't have enough room for it and i am going to use the money towards some new bike tools.

Your local market being Northern Ireland makes it impoosible for me too comment on the value for your locality. Unless you are thinking of selling it on Ebay?
