Pricing used Surly frames
Hi all--not sure if this qualifies as 'classic,' but this forum seemed the best fit.
My fall project is going to be to build a sturdy steel one-speed for winter and year-round commuting use. I've settled on the Surly Cross Check frame as it seems like a good entry-level and versatile bike, and the geometry is good for a short fellow such as myself. I've been hoping to find a used frame for purchase, and my question is about how much I should spend. From my searches on craigslists and ebays, most of the frames I'm seeing, regardless of size, are selling at around the 250 mark. I'm wondering how much a few-year-old (let's say 2007 and onward) Surly cross frame in pretty good condition should be selling for. I mainly ask because I found a website with cheap shipping selling new cross check frames for just over 300, and they have my size in stock. Besides the instant gratification aspect, it just seems like I should splurge on a new one if, after the ebay shipping mark up, I'd end up spending only 20-50 less on a used frame anyhow. But if this is something I should definitely not be spending over 200 on used, I'd be more tempted to wait until I saw my size available on the used marketplace. Thoughts would be helpful! Thanks!

Surly is a brand that gets a lot of street cred with many different types of cyclists; hipsters love 'em, beardos love 'em, roadies love 'em, mountain doods love 'em, etc., so they hold their value. I'd splurge and get one new and in my size if I were you.

They really aren't that much for a new Cross Check frame, so I wouldn't wait to look for a used one.

I agree with the other posters to go the new route. I was looking for a LHT used and found them not much less than a new one. So I ordered a blacktacular and have been happy ever after.

Thanks for the advice all. I decided to go for a new one and even ditched the shady PO box online stores in favor of paying a bit more at my LBS. Now the build-up fun begins.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
An older NOS frame should rate a nearly new price while a used frame should be worth at least 50% of new if it is in nice shape and perhaps a little more if it is in premium shape.
For a $50.00 difference I would buy the new frame, if the savings was more significant would look at a clean used frame.
