Trek 1100 - 1993 - Is it worth $285?

Hi,

I want a bike for commuting (approx. 10 miles/day) and currently use a mountain bike, but I've been thinking to get a road bike instead.

I found a 1993 Trek 1100 with Shimano RX 100 shifters for $285 on CL. Assuming it is in good condition, is this a fair price for this bike?
Here's the link to the CL post: https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bik/2570647337.html

Thank you!

Short answer, yes. Front fork does not appear original to me. If so, I would be VERY cautious. Front forks often get replaced after a bike is crashed. Other times, it is to upgrade the bike (but typically, that would be a move to a carbon fork). That fork does not look like carbon: danger, danger.

Wheels appear to match, thats a good sign. In my experience, a bike with mismatched wheels and a replaced fork is 99% chance of crashed (front wheel gets replaced due to damage). Again, if the front wheel matches the rear, and the wheels match original build spec, that would be a good sign.

In good condition, ready to go, I don't think that bike lasts very long in a hot market like Seattle.

Did a quick catalog check, fork should be painted to match bike, at least on the 1992. Every aluminum Trek I have seen from that era had a painted fork to match the bike......

I picked up a Trek 2000 Saturday, I really didn't appreciate that era Trek aluminum bike, but its a beauty.

Thanks wrk101!

I'm seeing the bike tomorrow and will ask about the fork. Assuming the fork isn't the original, is there anything I should look for?
Also, how much should I offer if it isn't an original/non-carbon? Or should I just let it go?

Sorry for all the silly questions, but I'm somewhat new to biking (I only do it for commuting).

I'd want a believable story, or I would keep looking. And of course, I would look for possible main frame damage, typical paint loss/ripple where the frame tubes meet the head tube.

BTW, that's a beautiful Trek 2000 you've got there. Nice!
