86 bertoni frame...

i got this frame in partial trade for a wheelset. it's a neat frame and has a lot of interesting details. i got it as an entirely bare frame. it didn't even have paint or decals. the only reason i know it's a "bertoni" is because the bottom bracket shell is stamped. i found a lot of information about this particular line of bikes from the links below but i'd like to know more about my frame.

my question is - how would a frame like this be measured? the top tube is 59 ctc but the seat tube is 60 ctc, give or take.

It seems that you already know how to measure correctly. Looks to be about a 60cm ctc. Fork doesn't look original to me though. Looks aluminum on a all chrome steel frame. I'd also venture to guess that the frame had its paint stripped since all the chrome was not polished. Check for frontal crash damage.

I also believe that Bertoni was created by Ben Lawee who also founded Italvega/Univega. You frame should be one of their nicer ones since it is fully chromed with Columbus dropouts.

Glad my wooljersey site helped you out.
1. Do you have a serial number - particularly a date code (something like A.7), stamped into the bottom of the BB shell?
2. Can you peer into the seat tube to see if you have SLX tubing ridges at the BB?
3. If that rear triangle is polished chrome than you may have the Italoro, Bertoni's top of the line. Here's one picture of one with C-Record and Sheriff Star hubs (I don't recall if the owner is a BF member, but he might be)

- The serial number says B.6 - which as far as I've read means that it was made in 1986 and then there is a number that says 9667 which I'm assuming means it was the 9667th made.

- as far as i can tell the tubing looks and feels smooth when i look down through the seat tube to the bottom bracket.

- the fork is definitely not original. you're right about that. if i build it up i think i'll get one of these... https://store.somafab.com/soclcurofo.html and use a threadless headset

- there seems to be some sort of residue from paint or adhesive or something on the seat stays but not on the chain stays. the chainstays are polished chrome and so are the dropouts.

--- yeah. i know how to measure the frame, technically. but i guess what i was asking is which measurement would the frame be labeled by, the seat tube or the top tube? i'm asking that because that catalog had a whole range of frame sizes depending on the model. some models had 59cm frames and some had 60cm frames.

it's a really nice frame, though, and i wish i could afford to build it up right now. if i keep it it's going to get put aside for quite a while.

ps - there doesn't appear to be any crash damage anywhere.

SL, not SLX tubing, and the polished chromed chainstay would appear to make it a Specialissima/Pro Victory. Looks like the same frame, just your choice of componentry.
