Even with Shimano 600, that is high. Of course I don't know your local market and location matters a lot. Does the bike fit you? That is a pretty small frame, probably need to be 5'6 or maybe less to fit comfortably. In my area, $250.00 or possibly a little higher to the right buyer if it is in very good shape.

BTW, I can't read the model name on the frame, but it is always nice to know what model it is. That might be a 1985 Super Sport, which had 600EX and came in a pearl white color. You can check the Schwinn catalolgs, which are available online.

It looks like a circa 1986 Schwinn Super Sport to me. (This one is a very small one well suited to a smaller rider.)

All of these Tenax Schwinns were really nice bikes, and I'd guess a clean, original and fully serviced version would bring $300 around here.
I can't be sure, but the bike in the CL ad appears to have a ( horrible ) gel saddle. Figure on an additional $40 for a passable replacement.

- Saddle is junk. Figure that into the price.
- I can't believe the seller doesn't even mention the make or model of the bike.
- Frame size is quite small. OP: how tall are you?
-
It's nice, but $400 is too much. I'd pay maybe $300-$325, and that's only if it's in very good shape.

I'm 5'3"...thanks for the estimates everyone...any suggestions for how to finesse these estimates into the negotiation process?

P.S. FastJake, I'm from Milwaukee! My parents' home is right by Marquette..

Ok, that bike will fit you. Basically the asking price is for a perfect example. Try to point out any defects to the seller explaining why you won't pay $400. Especially that awful saddle. Some sellers will budge, others won't. Whatever you do, don't pay $400 for it. You can get a modern bike with STI shifters for that price if you look hard enough.

Cool! I like Milwaukee.

Personally, I avoid debates with sellers. This seller thinks this bike is worth around $405, we do not. Instead, I keep it simple. I just tell them the bike is nice, but its only worth $325 to me (or whatever my number is). IF they ask you why so low, then go into detail, I am going to need to replace the saddle, get the bike tuned up, and so on, so thats all my budget will allow.

Some sellers won't budge, despite asking too much. If so, move on.

+1 If you want a good deal, look harder.

Thank you everyone. FYI, I bought the bike today for $325. (And that was before I saw your post, wrk101!) It rides pretty perfectly and is in astoundingly good condition...it is indeed a Schwinn Super Sport fitted completely with Shimano 600 components, and it literally only has a 3-4 identifiable scratches on it.

I feel pretty good.

Well done! The Tenax Schwinns are all really nice. The deciding factor for me on a bike is the condition of the paint and decals. Correcting major paint defects can be very expensive.

Sounds like your paint is outstanding. Great!

Will do The seller's wife apparently bought it as a racing bike back in the 80s in California for around $900, but never really used it, it's basically been sitting in her basement for all these years. It's almost pristine! Also, I checked it against photos of Schwinn Super Sports and it is indeed from 1985 (it's this exact one right here...if this one is in actuality beige/cream colored): https://www.bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/...per_Sport.html

FYI, I think the saddle looks like **** largely because there's a removable gel pad on it.

Thanks again everyone.
