Gitane really worth this much?
Saw this ad for a Gitane on ebay "Vintage GITANE bike frame bicycle parts from velox old ten speed pedals french", item #350500943601, at a buy it now price of $425. Is this a reasonable price or is this guy nuts? The reason I ask is that I recently bought a complete bike that looks very much like this one for cheeps & I'm wondering if I stumbled onto a big profit deal.

No description, ridiculous price, what a joke. Steel cottered crankset, stamped dropouts, etc. I wouldn't pay $50 for that rusty pile.
If you post a picture of your bike we can help determine the value. Don't worry, I promise won't be so harsh as long as you don't set the listing at $425

How do yo post pics? I tried imageshack HTML thumbnail but it doesn't work & when I clicked on the insert image icon it asked for a url but the images in my pictures don't have a url cause they're not from the net.

Does imageshack have the IMG code? That's what I always use to post here from photobucket. You should be able to upload photos directly from your computer provided they are small enough by clicking on this icon:

Sorry it's hard to see, it was a screen capture. Ignore the red border..

BIN is $125, not $425. Still a pass.
P.s. If you ask an online community for confirmation as to whether you stumbled on a big profit deal, it will likely be gone before you can click BIN/meet the seller.

This does seem high even at $125 in most markets you could find similar French bikes that are complete for this price or close to it.

Forgive the messy paint work, I can do better with more time and effort...
This is what you want to do, it's how I posted this image:

*Edit: I see what you mean, sometimes only the URL option pops up. I accessed the "from computer" option from the quick reply box. In any case, I usually just upload my photos to photobucket. They always work from there.

$10; Tops; if I were in a good mood, it fit me, and I felt like dealing with an obsolete french bike.

that looks like I imagine my old Gitane. Except for I'm pretty sure my old Gitane either got melted down or is under a few million tons of trash at the dump. I regretted seeing that thing go out on bulk trash day at my dad's house, but it would have cost me more than it was worth to ship it home.

A complete, lower lever Gitane, in reasonable condition and from that time period, can easily fetch $150.00, in most markets, but shipping costs will drive the value up, considerably.
As for an asking price of $425.00, it is unlikely it would have sold. At $125, without wheels, it probably won't sell, either.
Just an opinion.

+1 Use a hosting site and compress your pics to the 200kb +/- level. I do it on Microsoft Photo Manager or similar, and pick "document" for size.

Pass on that pile. Seller is dreaming.

Regardless of what model, it looks like it's been sitting in a dirt floor shed for 40 years. If it were clean, it would have a chance even without the wheels and derailleurs. It most likely had Simplex Prestige derailleurs which no doubt fell apart years ago. In its current shape its a gamble that there's no serious internal rust, and your looking at spending hours polishing and cleaning just what is there, and replacing any rusty hardware.
