Melton Appraisal

I have had this bike for more than 3 decades. I purchased the Bike from Mike when he was here in Columbia, SC, a very long time ago!! This was my daily ride while in college. I put many a mile on her. She has been hanging in my garage since the late 80's. I am considering putting the bike up for sale and was just wondering what she was worth. The frame is 22". The frame has the following numbers on the bottom:
249 677
JY 77
026

Thanks, Sam

Hello Samtc, welcome to the forums. I am not familiar with the brand but I am sure someone will be along shortly who is. I can't quite make out the brand and model on the cranks what is it?

The bikes seems like a was a nice bike once but it need alot of elbow grease to get it in shape to get top dollar on the auction block.

I do not buy and sell much but as this is sitting I would not pay much more the $50 to 75 since it needs a complete overhaul and likely cables, tires, and maybe a chain plus bar tape and brake hoods.

Melton is one of those builders who has played a part in the USA Cycling teams over the years. Not a big following though. This example suffers from plain lug work and that top tube dent. It is probably worth more to you than to someone else. Keep it for the memories. It reads as though it has served you well.

+1

It could be fixed up to be ridden once again, but between the really rough paint and dent in the top tube you're probably better off keeping it. As-is, I don't think I'd pay more than $50.

I buy and sell a lot of bikes but the one that I can't let go of is my commuter, a 1995 Gary Fisher Tassajara. Nothing special but that bike is so perfect (to me) that I hope to have it forever. It has suffered more abuse than any bike I've owned and never misses a beat.

Mike left Columbia in the early 80's.... Yeah, the dent was the result of someone pulling out in front of me. Nasty case of asphalt rash! Thanks! Sam
