Beat up Schwinn Caliente

I was at a "Yard sale" (A couple of mechanics selling a bunch of next, magna, and roadmasters outside of the shop) was weeding through the walmart restore specials, and came across an old (I'm guessing 27") Caliente They told me they were still working on it. (It had 2 blown dry rotted tires, a rusted out chain, and was in general just in very ugly but salvagable condition. I asked him how much he wanted for it, as is, and he told me $150. Not sure if he was serious, I kind of stared at him for a second and he said "This bike would usually sell for $300-$400" It was a friend of my father so I politely told him that was a little rich for me. Anyone else think thats an obsurd price for a beat up old schwinn? Or was I just being cheap?

Yes I do. I believe the Caliente was a lowerend model which was a basically just a step up from Free Spirit.
One morning you wake up, the girl is gone, the bikes are gone, all that's left behind is a pair of old tires and a tube of tubular glue, all squeezed out"

+1... based on description, that bicycle isn't worth more than $30.00 tops.

The Caliente was a basic recreational drop bar 12 speed bike similar to a Panasonic Sport 500 or Miyata Sport 10. A model like that
in its heyday sold for approx $169.95 to $189.95 brand new.

The unfortunate thing is that today, any older bicycle with narrow tires and drop bars is automatically classified or looked on as
'vintage' and therefore by default commands a higher price, even though that asking price isn't justified by the quality of the
frame and components.

Bottom of the barrel. In that condition, I wouldn't be interested for more than $5-10. In excellent original condition they can sell for close to $100 around here.
