Fair Price? $500 for a refinished 1958 Gillott Frame and Fork

Hey Guys,

I came accross an A.S. Gillott frame today that I was pretty taken aback by it. It's exactly my size as well, and in great shape. However, it's obviously been repainted at some point. It was a professional job to be sure, the decals, paint and lug lining are excellent. The owner is asking $500 and is firm at that price, does that seem reasonable for a refinished frame?

Sorry, I wasn't able to snag any pictures, but it appears to have the same lug set as this frame:

Should also mention a few other details I suppose. Frame's a 57cm, full butted 531 with campagnolo dropouts front and rear. Overall it's very well constructed, you can tell someone took their time on it. I haven't been able to find a ton of specific information about that year but I did read that Ron Cooper was building most of their frames by 58, not sure if that would help the value out. Thanks in advanced!

How many others of this size and type do you expect to cross your path?

Not cheap, but a new respray could get close to the asking price. If the ends appear original, buy it.

Or don't. I am relieved that someone else for example bought that late 60's very early 70's light blue DeRosa on ebay recently. That was $4,000.+ I get to keep.

+1. When you get the stuff you're never likely to see again, it gets harder to price it. Way harder. You just have to figure this one out on your own, sorry. The price does not seem insane to me. The one you linked to is a real beauty; if this one is anything close, it seems reasonable. Figure out if you want it, figure out what can be afforded, and go from there. If this bike were dangled in fornt of me the temptation would be tough.

I have two bikes I have almost no idea what the value is. A Schwinn Varsity, I can figure out. But the rarer stuff, not always.
