Old School Schwinn Tandem

Hi everyone!

Below you find some pics of a Schwinn tandem bike I bought five or six years ago when a neighbor was having a garage sale. I only paid like 25 bucks for it but i think it is worth much more than that despite the fact is is kinda rough shape.

I have a big group of friends and we used to meet about once a month and go bar hopping on our bikes. We called it "Sunday Fun Day". Basically it was a small version of pub crawl on bikes. Man were those days fun! But, now we never do it anymore. Kids, jobs, home improvement, wives and all the things that take away "fun time" seem to have invaded my friends lives and I am slowly realizing that the those days are a thing of my past.

It has been at least two years since i have lifted my leg over my tandem and peddled off to the bar. I cruise around on my fancy pedal powered chopper but the tandem has sat in my shed for a long time.

So, there's the back story. Well last night my friend (and bartender) asked how come he never sees my bike gang at his place. Not on our bikes anyway. And I told him how all of us are old and busy etc and that those days are over. "Well what happened to that old school tandem you used to have?"

I explained I still have it sitting in my shed waiting to be ridden. (And to have its flat tires repaired).

"SELL IT TO ME" he demanded!

So after he generously over poured me for the rest of the night we came to an agreement. I explained that its a vintage bike. Its not in great shape, paint is hammered and sun bleached, seats are mismatched and worn, flat tires, minor surface rust. etc. but it rides fine. He is kinda a hipster type and likes the beat up look he says. He also appreciates that its likely a valuable item to somebody. If I sold it for 26 bucks I would be making money on it but I think I can get much more than that.

He just wants it to have fun with. He has plenty of cash and is not afraid to pay fair market value for "the OG Style ride" (his words).

So he told me to go online and see what its worth and as long as I'm not trying to rip him off he will pay.

So thats how I got here. I hope you guys can tell me what a fair price for this thing is. It rides fine minus the fact it has two flats. I will probably just go on ebay and get the stuff to replace the tires and tubes so I can present him with something he can pedal off on so please consider that when offering opinions.

ANd if you can tell me what year etc it was made or anything else I should no about its rarity or lack of rarity please throw that info my way also.

Thanks for reading my story and I look forward to your comments.

If it were in great condition, which it is not, it'd fetch about $200. I'd say $50 as is, $100 with new tires and tubes (but be willing to haggle).

If you want to go deeper into its lineage, find the serial #. There are old Schwinn serial # databases that can help you determine when it was
manufactured. Try your local LBS for tires/ tubes; the S-6 Schwinn stuff on the Bay commands top dollar, and the sellers know it.

In its present condition? $75.00 as it sits. There's a guy here in Denver who has a nice Twinn in the Magenta color (rare) that he's trying to
sell for $400.00.

Value is all about condition, and in particular, the condition of the frame (paint, decals, rust free, etc). Well, the frame is in poor condition, I do not see much value there. $25 is about right, maybe $50 max.

Well I aired up the fron tire and its holding fine 12ish hours later. The rear it turns out I have a tube for but it had a small ole so i am patching it.

I did look for a serial number on it but couldnt find one. Where are these usually located? I checked what I thought were the obvious places...

I also looked on craigs list and saw the same bike. Well, it looked the same anyway but with nicer original paint. He was asking 400. he said his was a 68. is that circa what mine is ya think?

I think I will ask my buddy for 100 for mine. I bet thats a nice round number he will like.

Thanks again for the help everyone...

A lot of people think tandems are worth a lot because they're unusual, but the truth is they're not actually very rare, and while people will agree that they're cool, not many people actually want to take one home. A person here has been listing one repeatedly for $300 for months now. But they're simply not going to get $300 for it, so they can keep dreaming.

The serial number should be on the head tube. Either that or on the rear drop out.

+1 The serious tandem riders look for something higher end. So this bike is more of a novelty item, which limits the value quite a bit.

One of three places:

1) Stamped on the Left Rear Dropout.

2) Stamped on the underside of the Bottom Bracket Shell.

3) Stamped on the bottom Right Hand side of the Head Tube.

So I told him 100 bucks two nights ago. He says no. His girlfriend told him that morning she was preggo and since he is gonna be a daddy he needs to not buy stuff like this and start saving for diapers....

After congratulating him i went home and put the tandem on craigslist at 11pm for 100 bucks and used the same pics i put in this thread...

here is what my ad said...

Up for sale is an old school Schwinn tandem bicycle. Its scratched up and the paint is faded. The seats dont match. The handbrake is useless but it has a pedal brake. The front tire holds air but the back tire needs to be replaced. It has a new tube in the rear tire but the sidewall of the tire itself was destroyed when my roommate rode it with a flat.

This bike is old and worn and if it was mint it would be worth big bucks. All I know is that this thing is dripping with style and was a blast to ride. This bike will get you laid and is cooler than anything you own.

The price is 100 bucks. I have a busy life but can make time for serious buyers.

Please message me with your phone number and a good time to call you back.

I had an email in 5 minutes and a man with a 100 dollar bill at my door at 8am the next morning.

I almost wish I had asked for more money...

Thanks again for your help everyone.
