Trek 1420-- Worth it?! Help!
I'm in the market for a decent road bike to commute on, as well as longer weekend rides. My budget is 500 max. I found this Trek 1420 that looks to be in excellent condition and I think it would fit my needs well. The seller is asking 475, which I feel is a bit high. Worth it? Any other suggestions?

Looks like the bike is in great condition; is it the right size for you?
Bottom line is to take it for a test ride and see how she feels to you, just like trying on a new suit.
Personally I would see if he'd take $425, but he knows what he has. See what happens.

That's too much. That's a nice looking bike, but there isn't a big demand for aluminum frames. I think the price is high by at least $100. You can do better with a $500 budget.

DT shifter bike, about 20 years old, grossly overpriced. About $200 over priced.
At that price level, I would expect to get a bike with STI shifting, five years old or newer, with good grade components.
I would spend some time on the web getting educated, and then pounce on a deal when it appears. Deals do not last long enough to get an answer to: "Hey is this a good deal?". Folks like the guy selling this bike will pounce on them, clean them up, and resell them. Nothing wrong with that, its just how it works.
The good news is that pouncers cannot be everywhere at once. In addition, most pouncers need screamin' hot deals, leaving good deals for others (but beating them out of a screamin' hot deal is kind of fun).
