65 schwinn upgrade wheelset
Hi guys/girls. I've recently acquired a 65 Schwinn varsity that oddly enough, I'm in love with. So I've completely tore it apart, scrubbed, lubricated and painted the thing and now I'm stuck with a decision. I've got the steel wheels spotless, they look like new. But they're heavy. I am replacing the single piece crank with a 3 piece and didn't have a hard time finding one that would fit. I am having a HUGE issue finding wheels though. I've got a set of aluminum wheels on my fuji 4.0 I love but can't find them cheap enough.
So, any suggestions on a cheaper set of 700c or 27" in aluminum that are cheap enough to toss on a varsity?
2 more questions. The road bars that came stock on it are really narrow. I'm 6'5" and 190 lbs, the things almost make me lock my arms upright. VERY narrow. Would it change the bike much to add wider bars? I've got a set 7" wider that feel much better.
Last question. All the stock crap I'm not putting back on it, wheels, derailer, crank, some rear rack that was an optional piece and possibly the bars and brakes, are they worth anything anywhere? they're all in pretty ok shape, 8/10 on my scale. Or should I toss them back in the shed for another project?

How cheap?
You can buy a fully built alloy 27" wheel for $30 or less...
Niagra has 27" 36 hole alloy rims for $13 each: https://www.niagaracycle.com/product_...ducts_id=32110
That's probably the cheapest out there for alloy rims.
PS: the original stuff isn't worth much unless it's mint. It's very common stuff, Schwinn stamped out a million of these things.

Huge problem finding wheels? Just post a WTB ad in your local C/L, in the bicycles for sale section.
I find used wheels all the time on C/L or whatever. Bought two sets last week, $10 a set.
Finding wheels is one of the easier quests in my experience. Note, at the right price, sometimes wheels come in the form of an entire bike. I have done that many, many times.
