That's $400 for a nice frameset with a mutt group.

27" Super Champion Tandem rims, bottom-of-the-barrel Modolo brakes, and a smattering of Suntour don't add up to anything particularly valuable. The Bullseye hubs are nice, but that's all I can say for it.

Fork blades also look just a tad odd, as if it's had a slow front-ender, or that the builder brazed the blades so that the tapering rear edge of the blade is parallel to the headtube, rather than following the centerline of the blade.

501 tubing? Didn't know BJ ever used that. Remember there was a dark period in BJ's history, after he sold the compant and before he reacquired it.

Seller is an idiot too - the bike clearly has a pre-1983 Reynolds 531 decal on it.

"Clearly" as in the seller's perspective, seeing that he has direct access to the bike (and can see the decal without the inherent noise of the internet medium).

I know what you were getting at. My point is that to the majority of people bikes are just bikes. They don't care about the minutiae. That doesn't make them idiots, even though it's easy enough to look closely and see the "0" is actually a "3".

Right. The seller took the time to read and include all of the written words on the bicycle. I'm not sure what you're trying to argue, but I'll defer to you on whatever it is.

Makes one want to read every Craigslist Notice from now on, no matter how innocuous sounding .

I'd offer him $200 and see what he says. This has been on CL a long time. I've seen it for at least a month. But, Kurt is right. Decent (but not great) frame with midline components that have little resale value and little character to begin with.

Well, I've certainly seen lesser bikes on CL for that much money.

Also, in fairness to the seller, if that's a diagonal 531 sticker as it appears to my eye, it would be easy enough for a layperson to mistake the 3 for a 0.

I wouldn't quite say that. It'd look absolutely stunning with a Brooks Pro (black, brown, or honey), and dark blue cotton bar tape. A Zeus 2000 group would look particularly nice, or perhaps a combination of long-reach Mafacs with a Simplex/Stronglight (or TA Pro 5 Vis) drivetrain.

I saw it when it first appeared weeks ago so yes it has been listed for a while. I got excited about it since it's in my backyard but didn't pursue it. If it was listed at $200 I would have been on it. It didn't add up to $400.

I think it would be good at $300. I'd consider that to be $200 for the frame and the rest for the build. If you could get it for $200 I'd jump on it.

I alway love the "hand of God" photo techique. Wouldnt' go over $300 for the bike. Hubs are worth about a C-note.

Wow , pretty bike . I think it's time to face reality , though , for the seller . Offer 300.00 . It may have had better components at one time . It looks like a big frame , probably not too many of those made it from Leeds to the U.S., and probably fewer yet to H-Beach . Lots of levels of 531 , some just main tubes, some all 531, some butted 531 . Looks like the paint is still good, too . Best of luck on getting it for 3 .
