Is this a deal or a letdown? Need some vintage expert advice!

My friend is selling his Trek 2000, it's a 1990 model & has been well-maintained.
It has a brand new bontrager seat and & tires on it.
It has a T2 True temper aluminum frame.
It has Shimano 600 SiS crank, hub, brakes and derailuers.

He wants to sell it for $350 - is this a fair price?

Also, I'm 5'10" & it's a 58cm frame. Will I be able to fit on it?

Thanks in advance!

Why not ask your friend if you can ride it and see if it fits?

I wouldn't pay that much for an old aluminum frame. It's not a terrible deal, nor is it a great one. It isn't a bike I'd have interest in.

As for size, it's impossible to say for sure, but that's probably too large a frame for MOST people of your height. Preferences vary.

Around here, $350 will get you a newer version with STI shifting. PASS.

If you ride it with the saddle that low, then the frame is TOO big. Google bike sizing, lots of theories out there.

Looks like a repaint, if so, then its a HUGE PASS. Repainted with original decals gone = large drop in value.

Some issues in the pics.....size may be good for a person 5'10", I'd like to see more pics.

58cm should just be about right for a 5'-10" rider, unless you might have disrpoportionately long or short legs. Easier to deal with arm legnth with different stem legnths. $350 does sound a bit high for the particualr bike you have in your pics. Maybe in NOS or mint condition with perfect, original Trek graphics on the frame, the price might approach that amount, but with this one, I think you are justified negotiating for a lower price (somewhere in the $200's, depending on components and finsh condition).
BTW, the slammed saddle height on that bike is way too low. Expect to be adjusting it much higher for your height, so make sure that the seatpost is not stuck in the frame before you buy it. If it is, ask for more discount on the price as it could be really difficult to release it. Not impossible, but not easy either.

Stem looks slammed in too...

Honestly, the more I look, I take back what I said about it being not a great deal or a bad one...it's too much for that bike. Aluminum frames have fairly low resale value, they aren't especially desireable, so really...you're buying a parts group. The parts group doesn't justify the price. In that condition, fair is $250, maximum, and I wouldn't pay that.

Nice looking bike. if it is a repaint then it is minus value. You can do better with your $350

Pass. When you go to sell it, the prospective buyers won't believe your story about what it is/was and why it came to need a repaint or why there isn't frame damage concealed under the ugly gray paint. You believe your buddy's story, but you're not their buddy. So you will be lucky to get $200 for it.

IMHO and I'm in the Raleigh NC area that is $150 bike and I would be buying it for the parts. if you have $350 you can do a lot better on craigslist. Sorry.
