Super course mixte

Hi: I'm set to go look at this bike, hopefully this weekend, as a keeper for the wife. Problem is that it's a long drive and the seller says I'm first, but others want to see it too. So, I figure I have to be prepared to pay the asking price of $100 because I'm not driving out there twice.

Bike is a Raleigh Super Course Mk II mixte:

Seller 'upgraded' the bar and shifters, doesn't think he still has the original stuff.

So my questions, assuming it check outs okay, good deal at $100?

That's funny, cause I sent him a nice polite email about it on 6/26 and never heard bupkis. I have to pick up a Trek in Brattleboro, so I thought, why not?

I think he's come down from $125.

Ha ha! Figured for sure "I have others interested" was BS to keep me from offering less than the asking price. From what I got he's been busy and traveling or something because he's not been able to show it.

So, does anyone who is not also in line to buy this bike have an objective assessment? Specifically, is that Huret derailleur crap? Is this is a good candidate for an in-house restoration to be put back on the road for the wife at $100? Oddjob, I'd be interested in your opinion here too, but forgive me if I'd take it with just a grain of salt.

That Huret derailleur is a Challenger and is NOT crap. ATMO it rivals the best Japanese derailleurs from the period and it's better than the rest.

PS - Joel - If you want a mixte for your wife, you would be hard pressed to find another better one in Reynolds 531 for a hundred bucks.

My concern is the bubbling green paint at the fork. Does that mean rust on the frame? The wheels look pretty rough too.

If you have all the tools and access to inexpensive parts, why not?

I thought you got that other Raleigh mixte a few weeks back in Burlington?

Have you checked out this one?

Thanks Auchen.

And oddjob, I was curious about that bubbling, but thought it might be a good deal anyway. And yes, I scored that other Raleigh mixte in Burlington. Since it came by way of a bike shop servicing in the last 2 years it's going nearly directly into service (plus drops and bar ends). Figured this one could be a project for the off season, despite seller's ready to ride statement. I'm new around here, but does n+1 not apply to spouses too?

Mixtes are about the best investments today, other than Apple stock!

oddjob2 07-08-12 01:37 AM

Joel,
Did you check it out?

Its a deal, and the Rapide is a dud. Hopefully you snagged it.

+1 Mixtes are a solid investment right now, continually going up, relatively hard to find, with strong demand.
