I have an opportunity to purchase a Schwinn 1950, 51, 52? Phantom Cruiser. Restored with original parts, repainted with custom paint job. What's it Worth??? I hope I can get some ideas as far as price in the next two days... Thanks all.... Happy Safe Biking... :D

I could be wrong but I think an original Phantom may be valuable to some balloon collects but a repaint, especially a custome one would destroy most of its's value.

Thanks BianchiGirll.... I just do not want to over pay for the Phantom, because we have a Classic Bike Club here in the Bronx, NY and to join one needs a vintage Schwinn, so do you know what these gems are going for in original or as a restore bicycle?

The best guide to real world prices is completed auctions on eBay.

1952 Schwinn Green Phantom went for $876.66 with 44 bids.

1995 100th anniversary reproduction Schwinn Black Phantom went for $510.00 with two bids.

Bianchigirll is correct when she said that paint job totally destroyed the resale value for most collectors.

Thanks for the information Scooper... What I'm going to pay for the Phantom is going to be worth it. I was thinking of joining a Classic Bike Club, and thought this model would be an interesting added attraction to the club. It doesn't matter if the bike was original or restored, as long as I'm paying a ball park price for the bike in either condition. This way if I should need to resale it, I don't have to be worrying if I'm going to get my money back, or lose out selling the bike for less... That's why it's a good idea to be a member of a forum like this where there are many very knowledgeable people who know there stuff concerning this type of stuff, and where you get your questions answered with many opinions and facts towards the truth concerning bicycles. Agree with $300, as a rider not a collectable.

The repaint would make me seriously question if this bike is even a Phantom. Cranks, wheels, stem, bars, seat are all replacements. It could be any generic Schwinn frame with Phantom fenders, tank, and rack. With reproduction parts widely available, who can say what this bike really is?

I wouldn't accept this as a Phantom or pay anywhere near Phantom prices. It certain shouldn't be marketed as such (although, I sure it is and is probably priced accordingly)

Personally, I would hold out for the real deal, or look for a nice Jaguar, Panther, or Hornet. All these will hold their value nicely and ride beautifully.

seller is asking 500.00 firm, because of what he paid for the pint job. Or I can include a Schwinn World Sport that needs work, and a 26" Road Master the price will be 400.00...

Contact the club, and see if they have any members selling bikes. A lot of clubs have newsletters, and either there will be bikes for sale, or you can post a wanted ad. I would expect many of the club members to have multiple bikes, and maybe a few that they would like to move on to a new owner.

One of the things I really liked about those bikes was the interesting paint schemes. The repaint really ruined it. Check the one that sold on ebay (Stan's posting), it was a beauty.

Thanks... That's what I thought... The seller went ahead and had the bike repainted, ran him about 550.00. I'll past on this one... Thanks for saving me from over paying on this sell, and since he wants 500.00 firm and will not haggle I'll just forget about the sell...

Original but a lot of rust. I thought the price was way high, but I could be wrong. It's not moving at that price in any case.

Not to mention, that one in ALL original condition, but showing some age and patina, is not only worth more, but in my opinion, if not too ragged, is waaay cooler !

That Jaguar is quite the ticket, looks very original, and is worth the price, if that is what you are looking for. If I was closer, I would be tempted, as the rich kid down the street had a bike like that when I was growing up.
