Hey Everyone,

Found this bike on craigslist, upon emailing the guy selling it I found out the bike is a Centurion Lemans and has a 56cm frame (the exact size I'm looking for). Is it worth $215?

I wish the photos were closer and clearer, but as is, the bike looks clean and ready. It is a bit heavy, but built well, can take a beating.
The equipment is entry level, very basic, but then, you can always upgrade as you go if you fall in love with it. I would say ride it, and see if you like the weight and the feel of it. If it needs tires or tubes or such sundry items, I'd make an offer a bit lower, say $ 175-180.....

If it needs nothing and you like the ride, then yeah, probably $200. Certainly not the deal of month, but ok.

Steel rims, claw RD hanger, nutted axle, stem shifters, swaged crank, turkey levers = no, not close either.

Like most models, this bike changed year to year, some years were basic, some were pretty good, some were in between. This is one of the early, basic models.

Sounds like seller paid too much for it.

Except in one of those red hot markets: SF, NYC, Portland, OR, and a handful more, the $200 mark is where you start seeing some good vintage bikes, with alloy quick release wheels, DT shifters, cromoly frame, frame mounted RD, various alloy parts.

I envy you guys in the bigger population density areas. You have so much more to choose from.

It is a rare exception to find any kind of good deals out here... Basic crap Wally World stuff is the norm, and usually at prices almost the same as retail. Anything remotely good starts at $300 it seems....hence the reason the last few bikes I have purchased have also incurred shipping costs.

Thank goodness I'm moving to Seattle next year !

Compare my population density to Vegas and you will surely be way on top. But I am very patient, and look at more sources than C/L. I also cast a wider net, the better the deal, the longer I will drive. A minority of the "catch of the day" that I post come off C/L.


And I look whenever I am traveling somewhere by car. So I am not just drawing from western NC, I have gone to Atlanta, Charlotte, as far into SC as Charleston, SC, up into Tennessee, etc. On trips, I have drawn from Indianapolis, Chicago, various cities in FL, etc.

Randy Jawa has a good guide on finding bikes, use as little or as much of it as you would like.

Seattle has a terrific selection for sure, at prices quite a bit higher than here in Hooterville. So it kind of balances out.

My other HUGE advantage is I am not limiting myself to my size. That opens up a lot of deals that clearly do not fit.

+1 Look when traveling! I have bought bikes throughout southeast Michigan, Grand Rapids MI, Burlington VT, Albany NY, Adirondacks NY, Hudson Valley NY, Northern NJ.

Given the lack of "affordable" road bikes in Flagstaff, you might want to explore the thread on this forum on drop bar/commuter conversions on mtb bikes as an alternative.

Also, just looking at LV CL, there are lots of good and great deals on MTBs.

Here is my $200 Centurion Comp TA, bought last Friday. Full Shimano tricolor.

Centurions at the time only came in 19, 21, 23, 25" versions measured center to top. Not sure how he got 56 cm out of that, even at center to center. Top tubes did not grow fast though, so a 23" might fit like a smaller bike, save for the stand over height.
I would look for a better value. A $100. bike to my way of thinking, as a purchase to use.

Wow, thanks guys. I'll definitely pass this up, I doubt I could talk him down to $50! haha Also, I'd go for that Fuji if it were 56cm or even a little larger. I'm trying to get a bike for my 16 year old brother who's currently 5'9" and growing like a weed, a 54cm frame is probably too small. Thanks everybody!
