Norco Monterey (Im guessing mid to late 80s) - $200.00 Toronto area - worth it?
 
Hello,

Wondering if you all could help me out here. The guy's ad says 260.00 but he's gone down to 200 as per his reply to me.

Provided the bike really is in the great condition it looks to be in, would you say its worth the price?

The subject bicycle appears to be a circa 1987 Monterey. It's an entry level model. $260 would have been close to the original MSRP. While it appears to be in excellent condition, I think $200 is on the high end for Burlington, which shouldn't be quite as high a priced market as Toronto. All things considered, I'd say about $150 is fair price.

If you do go to see it, doublecheck the stem. It's almost certainly well beyond it's safe insertion limit.

As T-Mar says, that would be a nice bike for $150 but it isn't worth the drive to Burlington for $200. Sadly, that is about as good as it gets in Toronto though, the market is full of flippers with outrageous prices.

Thanks for the advise T-Mar - I'll probably pass on this one and keep looking for the time being.

Just curious (as I am a bike newbie), when you say insertion limit, it means how high the stem can be raised right? I could always lower it a bit and it would be safe right?

Yes, most stems have a line or hash marks to indicate the minimum amount the stem must be inserted into the fork to be safe (i.e. the line/hash marks nust be hidden). While there are some very tall aftermarket stems, most stems that come with bicycles cannot be raised as high as shown. I suspect it would beed to be lowered about 5cm to be safe.

BTW, I'd keep my eye on this bicycle. I suspect it's not ging to sell soon, given the price and approaching winter. They may be willing to take a lot less in about a month.

If you have a smaller road bike you're willing to part with, you could see if he's willing to trade. I know it sounds like a long shot, but based on the seat and stem, it's clearly too big for whoever has been riding it and they might be willing to make a deal. You never know...
