1991 Miele Gara Road Issue Appraisal

Any sale price estimates on a 1991 (I think) Miele Gara Road Issue? Frame size is 56cm. Fork is Columbus Cromor, I think I've heard the frame is the same? Headset, cranks, bottom bracket, front derailleur are Shimano 600 Tricolor. Brifters and rear derailleur are Shimano 105. 8 speed cassette. Condition is excellent, just some paint rub from the housing and a few wrinkles in the decals.

Market would be Boston... lets say at peak time of year.

Nice bike. Looks a lot like the 1990 I just (during the summer) bought on ebay as the lone bidder @ $99. (Shipping was not overpriced in the auction but I was local).
Granted, yours is in better shape, and mine is 7s, yours STI 8 (but probably retrofit from 7s).
In AL, I think I could get $300 for a Gara w/STI. Boston's going to be higher, I'm sure.

I would think you could command $350 in a decent market , with that 8 speed set-up.

It's a little weird that the shifters and the rear derailleur are actually a downgrade from the rest of the bike, usually the RD is the highest level component on a bike. Maybe they were added later, it's a 1991, so that's probably the case anyway.

Put it up for $500. At the height of the season I don't think it'd take someone very long to counter your $500 asking price with a $450 offer. You should take the $450 offer. (I still think this might be conservative, but I'm pretty sure you can get at least $450 for it).

FWIW, I would go out of my way to pay $350 for that bike, and I'm kind of a cheapskate.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I was having trouble valuing the semi-high end frame with not quite modern not quite vintage components.

I bought it as a frameset and built it up. I had the 105 components in my bin. I actually like that generation 105 shifters better than the 600. 600 had a resin covered faceplate that yellows badly and cheap chrome painted plastic that flakes. I'd still replace the rd with a 600 if I one pops up before I sell it.

I'm am not a roadbike person but am considering building a black 1994 Miele Road Issue CROMOR frame up that a friend has. Can you tell me if this frame was designed to use a 700c dia wheel or a 27" wheel? I was told it is a touring frame design as opposed to race frame, but the geometry looks very race. Could you shed any light on if it is a touring frame and wheel size or point me to references?

Thanks - John dubfast@hotmail.com

By the mid-90's there were few 27" bikes left, and my '90 uses 700c wheels. I'd be shocked if yours is anything but. Miele used "Road Issue" across multiple models & frames, so that's not really descriptive enough. Does the bike have any other touring clues, like canti brake posts, or additional braze-ons for racks? If not, it's probably not a dedicated tourer.

Thanks for the input. It seems that it would be a 700c wheel model because of the 94 year and being made in Italy. The frame has no canti brake posts on frame or fork, but it has two factory braze on eyelets like for a rack right beside the fork dropout slots.
