'81 Schwinn Super Sport price inquiry

Looking for a solid touring bike, and found a 1981 Schwinn Super Sport locally. Seller is asking $265 and says its in top condition. I haven't seen it yet though.

Assuming its in the condition they say it is (bearings are smooth, wheels are solid, cables and housing are clean, no rust, etc.), is this a fair price? If not, what would you think is a fair price?

Looks like a good rig for my purposes (months of solo touring, and don't have the funds for a new modern touring bike). Thoughts?

Thanks!

Here's the '81 SS catalog page: https://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1...0/1981_07.html

Nice bike, would be good for touring especially if it has the original racks. If it's in good ready-to-ride shape I think $265 is reasonable, but not an amazing deal or anything. This bike is not as well equipped as later 80s touring bikes but still very solid.

The one in the catalogue in your link is the spitting image of mine which I bought in 1983/4 after I moved here from the UK. As you can see from my pics I've upgraded much of the gear on mine, but I still have (somewhere in the garage) the original wheels (and the tyres/tubes), pedals, racks, saddle, even the reflectors(!!), Suntour FD & CycloneII RD - I think I paid ~$250 for mine back in 1983/4 if my memory serves me right! For the price you quoted, I'd go for it (depending on what shape it was in. Any pics???) - Wil

Can you tell me a little bit more about the wheels (seeing as yours are still original)? I'm planning on using this bike for several months of loaded touring, and wheels are a major concern!

I'm an hour away so haven't seen the it in person yet. The only pic I have is this one. It looks clean, potentially rust free, and with clean tape, hoods, and tires, but other than that its hard to tell.

How do you know it is a 1981 Super Sport? It is missing the triple crank, rear brake cabling and lack of cable stops is totally wrong. I can't find a Schwinn of that era with both clamp on top tube cable guides (old school) and bottle cage braze ons (newer school). Clamp on guides was a 1970s thing, bottle cage braze ons were a 1980s thing.

Sure does not look like a 1981 SS to me. It looks more like one of a myriad of nice Japanese bikes from that era.

No racks either.

My best guess is that wheels do not match original SS either.

Champion tubing sticker looks interesting, should tell you what grade the frame tubing is, if the sticker is original.

$265 is a strong price on that bike, unless you are in a hot market.

The one you pictured is not a touring bike.

I hope that is not overpriced. Will make for a profitable spring.

I am sorry. I should have made my first post longer. I think you could do better for a touring bike. That one has shorter chainstays and pretty high gearing for carrying any kind of weight. I think you would be much happier on a 80s era mountain bike with some slicks.
