Miele #1 - Appraisal and inquiry

Not the type of thing that sully shows up here, but I have this old Miele and I wonder what you all think of it.

I believe it is a 1985 model but can find very little about Miele bikes of this type.

It is outfitted with Suntour Mountech derailleurs & Suntour powershift thumb levers but everything else is Shimano, including the canti brakes.

Ishiwata frame, of course.

Are these things unusual or desirable ?

Other than making great, but heavy, commuters and touring conversions I don't think there is huge demand for these.

Knowing Michael's good scores, he undoubtably didn't over pay for Miele #1 or #2! #1 looks like a prime candidate for a MTB drop bar conversion. That chrome plated steel handlebar setup has got to weigh a couple of pounds. A Mountech derailleur set, with freewheel and shifters sold for $72 on fleabay, including shipping. It's not unusual not to see Suntour cantilever brakes, in fact, I can't recall ever seeing a set on the dozens of MTBs passing through my bike stand.

I've never seen a pre-1987 Miel ATB. My 1986 Miele catalog does not show ATBs, only road bicycles. While the decals are pre-1987, the frame itself exhibits some anomalies, particualry the Unicrown fork. I don't recall them in 1985. Regardless, this is old school ATB and it typically does not sell well, unless it is high end, preferably from one of the founding fathers.

+10 Very limited value in older ATBs, with the exception of a handful of high end ones, like the Specialized Stump Jumper. Everything else goes into the basic recreational bike market, competing against the new XMart stuff.

As always, a quick check of date codes will narrow the year up. The year will have little/no impact on value.
