Genuine Eddy Merckx ?

I have seen this bike around and inquired about it's availabilty. I was offered it for around 200 because the owner hasn't used it in ages, but I just don't know whether it is genuine or worth that much. Any help would be appreciated.

It doesn't seem to have any embossed metal badges, and I don't know anything about it's history, but does seem to be an altogether good bike. Nice and lightweight and in ok condition.

I couldn't seem to find a serial number on it. I suspect that might be a bad thing...

I've attatched some pictures

Thanks!

I have seen one other entry level Merckx and, like the one presented in this thread, it was nothing special, in my opinion.

The bicycle pictured appears to be an entry level model and, in my opinion, not worth any where near the 200 pounds asking price. For that money, you should be able to find something in better shape and higher end quality. Take that statement with a grain of salt, since I am unaware of where you live, and location has a lot to do with Vintage Bicycle Value.

Hope this has been helpful.

It's likely a Falcon made Merckx, and a fairly basic one at that. During his racing career, Merckx liscenced his name to Falcon in the US and Britian, and some other company whose name slips my mind on the continent. Value in the US hovers around 150$ USD, which is substantially less than 200 British pounds. Can't speak for value in the UK. That's for one ready to ride, which this does not appear to be. I'd pass.

I'm thinking that the pic of Eddie might be worth 200 pounds but the bike certainly isn't. This is a cheap bike with rust issues.

+1 to above. There were some cheap crappy Merckx bikes made in the 70s, not made by Eddy but by companies that put his name on the bike. This looks like one of those. It would be of no interest to me, and I wouldn't pay anywhere near 200 pounds for it. It's a $100 bike in really bad shape, which cuts the price in half or less.

Another bike with a misplaced decimal. 20 quid maximum value.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
I must add that I think he has added new Continental Gatorskin tyres recently which seem to be worth about 50 for the pair, and also a nice new saddle. Having said that it's still probably not worth more than about 50-100 I guess? It is in pretty rubbish condition and would probably need a bit of work to get it moving again.

Worth somewhere around cost of tires right this moment. Seriously. Bike probably needs a complete overhaul, new chain, etc.

I'd pass. When you're offering 1/4 of what a seller expects/hopes, no deal is in the offing. Unrealistic expectations on the part of a seller rarely seem unrealistic to the seller .

IDK, is there a Belgian Halfords , did Ed build , or licence his logos, to have a low price line ,
for the lumpen prolo, masses?

it certainly not a lightweight frame , and the component pick is all about lowering the sticker price.
