Sears 3-speed
Is this worth $65?
It's a Brittany Free Spirit...year unknown. The frame is in good shape; and the rack, fenders and saddle are nice, also. http://i.imgur.com/2XEoKTQ.jpg |
A campus coed would pay $65 for it, but no margin for a flip. They're all over Detroit, and all over the price map as well.

No. Sears bikes were junk, it's not even worth the gas to take the bike to a recycler and getting the cash from it!
There were certain 3 speed bikes that were sort of decent, the Schwinn Speedster and Racer, the Raleigh Superbe, Hecules, and a few others. But I'm not into the 3 speeds that much to list more great models of those, but the Sears was a piece of junk as were other retail store branded bikes back then...kind of like it is today. |

Goodrich, Eaton's, Simpsons, Sears, & other big department store chains did not have bike factories, so they farmed out production to whoever could supply the bikes. It is not unusual in Southern Ontario to see department store bikes made entirely in Japan - or imported directly from England with Stronglight cranks and TI-Raleigh frames made by Carlton in Worksop. Some of the DS bikes are actually quite nice with better fit and finish than the domestic Peugeots & Raleighs of the same era. |

Ashtabula / one piece crank would suggest that this isn't a Puch-Strehyer made cycle. I don't think it's worth the $65. Nothing particularly rare or quality.

+1 Puch Strehyer Sears 3 speed would be worth it. This one, no.

Thanks for the replies.
This is what I was thinking, but it really helps to be reinforced by those in the know. Thanks again! |
