Need more info on what bike this is.. Gitane?

I picked it up at the flea market but I don't know anything about it, if anyone has any input feel free to post it up!

I'll just let the pictures do the talking:

It's basically a Gitane mixte with a replaced (badly chosen) fork.....that's all I know.... I love mixtes and I like that color. If I could have gotten it for $40 or less I'd have done it. I'd then find a nice chrome fork for it.....

Looks like an early 70's Gitane mixte with a MTB fork. Missing original fork might be an indicator of a front end crash. Check around the headtube area for wrinkles.

I thought it was a mixte from all the searching I've done but wasn't sure, the stickers for throwing me off.

I didn't see any wrinkles or anything, frame looks pretty strait. What's the problem with this fork? I don't know much about bikes.

It's gonna be mainly used for commuting to school and around campus. Any idea on what it may be worth by the way?

The bike is indead a Gitane Mixte frame but it has been completely rebuilt with different parts most of which look like random somewhat low end Moutntain bike parts. If it rides good and everything works great I would say a $80 tops. The totaly mismatched fork and general iffy build realy kills any value this frame may ounce have had.

How one gets a MTB fork to hold with a French headset is a new feat in engineering. But that is not a French quill stem either, so now I'm totally stumped.
