Mid 80's Trek 310 Elance

Hi everyone. I am looking at buying this bike on CL but the price ($349) seems a bit high to me. Thought I would get some opinions, its local so no shipping or anything extra like that. I've been e-mailing back and forth and its a 53cm frame with 27" wheels, Suntour cyclone group set.

I'm test riding it this evening and looking at partial trading an 82 (I think) Fuji Supreme I have that is too large. The Fuji has Suntour 7 rd, simplex fd, suntour stem shifters, dia compe brake levers and calipers (side-pull), suntour sprint crank arms, generic pedals, original seat. It could use a good cleaning but everything works great and it is super light. I will upload pics later. In general what are either of these bikes worth? And is he asking too much?

Yes, he is asking too much. Around here, a 310 is $200 in pristine, ready to ride condition (I have sold several at that price, in that condition).

Trade in? Everything changes. Need to sell your bike outright, and then negotiate with cash. I've taken trades, but just like trading in a car, you are getting convenience of not dealing with a sale, so the dealer makes money on the car they sell you, and your trade in. It is the same with bikes. Realize when I take a trade in, I assume all the risk. Bikes traded in always need work, what if I find some hidden defect, what if I end up selling it for less than I think? Who pays for the time I spend rehabbing it and marketing your bike?

I had a buyer recently want to trade in a bike. I gave him an honest answer, I could give him $120 in trade in, or he could sell it himself for $200 (and I didn't go into it with him, but his "pristine" bike needed some serious maintenance work before I would sell it).

Fuji Supreme is not supreme, it's entry level, 9th out of 10 in their road bike line. Without pics no idea of value but by your description, it's low.

Supreme is not super light either, its towards the heavier end for that era.

Too much. The cranks are heavily oxidized, the chainring bolts and brake hardware are rusty. The bike probably needs to be disassemble, all the bearings serviced and the rusty parts cleaned up. If can't do the work yourself, you should pass this one up.

Thanks for the suggested price on the trek and the background on the Fuji wrk101! It sure seems light compared to my 77 sekai and 79 raleigh mixte....Here are some pics. Hopefully this will help! Thanks again!

Thanks brian3069! I can clean the bb and headset bearings myself, haven't ventured into hub bearings yet...

I've got two to flip. Not light at all, high tensile frameset.

On the Trek, note the fine hard plastic mtb pedals too!
