Kestrel CSX MB
I'm new to the forums and I just acquired a Kestrel CSX mountain bike. Anyone share information about this bike? I'm interested in having it refurbished but don't want o spend more than it's potential value.
This bike is given to me but if I was to buy it in its current condition what would I expect to pay? Ideas?

Hello Drexfor welcome to the forums. Great looking bike with lots of funky extras. Value on bikes like this can be hard to set. In general old mountain bikes have little value except for some highend ones like this. However the trick is finding the 2 people out of 10,000 who want it and are willing to pay. Considering the condition and the odd parts like the Kooks crank and stem, if your willing to work with a buyer to ship the bike you might get $500 or so on Ebay.
It looks to be in great shape and if your going to keep and use it certain is worth having an overhaul done, clean and regrease all the bearings, true wheels, adjust brakes and gears, that might run you $100-150 depending where you live.
The suspension fork may be an issue, since repair parts can be hard to come by and if it doesn't work it will need to be replaced.

I've owned one of these since 1992 and it's still one of my favorites although I moved on to full suspension some time ago. Thinking of converting it to a drop bar gravel grinder with a nice light non-suspension fork. You've got some funky parts and I think these came with decent drivetrains so if in good condition a guess would be $400 to $600. Condition would be very important.

I think that bike is really freaking cool, but I have very little idea what it's worth. $500 is probably in the ballpark. I wish I could see a driveside shot and know what kind of shifters/drivetrain are on it. That would definitely impact the price. Chris King headset tells me the rest is probably super nice too.
Those old Manitou forks were not great (in my experience) and that one is probably junk by now.

Thank you for all the responses and opinions too! I love just looking at this bike. The frame is in quite perfect condition with only two small chips in the paint.
FastJake...Here are more photographs of the drive train. I'll be taking the bike to the shop tomorrow and a in-depth reconditioning quote.
Please pardon the dog hair. The previous owner had four dogs and lot's of stuff in storage!

Those Kooka parts have value. Looks like the Kooka Rasta cranks sell in the $250 range on ebay and they gather a lot of interest. What a cool bike.

I bought this same bike from a bike store. I found this thread doing a search to find out what year it was. This bike is super clean with only a few paint chips, no scratches or cracks. I swapped the cranks, stem, wheels, seat for rideable parts and gave the bike a full cleaning and tune-up. It makes for a great wife bike.
