Detel Marathon 6000 - Whats it worth?

Hello Forum Family,

Just picked up a Detel Marathon 6000 for $50 bucks and curious to what it may be really worth. I know the short history of the company, and frankly never heard of them before this bike, but was wondering if this rarity is worth keeping or passing along for a good price. Any estimates on value? Bike is totally clean, has no rust, and functions well.
Thanks!

Definitely a great deal.

Can't tell you what it's worth without seeing more detailed/better pictures. What are the components? What's the frame tubing?

detel bicycles are not listed on bicyclebluebook.com sorry.

looking at it id say $50 was a good price. You could probably ask $100 on cl or ebay.

Suntour means zip. Suntour components showed up on bottom of the barrel bikes, top end bikes, and everything inbetween. Its all about what model Suntour. 022 tubing usually showed up on mid grade bikes, so regardless, well worth $50.

Suntour Superbe is the juicy (good) stuff. Depending on condition and market, $300 to $350 in ready to ride condition, $175 as it sits.

Awesome to hear. Bike is in ready to ride condition and priced as such. Also has Edco hubs if that helps any (once again another product I have not come accross in my previous flips)

Thank you

I guess it depends on what you call ready to ride. I see rusty cables and chain, which is a red flag to me, so I assume the bearings (hubs, headset, and bb) will all need to be serviced. See that sag in the chain? RD needs to be cleaned up, chain might be too long, etc. Add rusty freewheel and old tires that do not match. Nothing big, just a lot of minor stuff.

I agree with about $175 as it sits, maybe $300 fully overhauled.

Exactly. Is it possible to ride the bike? Sure. Is everything in proper working order? No. I'd need to see more detailed pictures to make better judgement on it but the slack chain obviously indicates a sticky freewheel, rusty/stiff chain, or a lot of crap clogging up the rear derailer.

Unless they are only a couple years old, 100% of the dozens of used bikes I've bought needed work, almost always a complete overhaul of all the bearings, and fresh cables/housing. I feel it's safe to say the grease in those bearings is dried up and needs to be replaced.

Now we're not saying there's anything wrong with your bike, but it just needs some regular maintenance. Consumable items like grease, cables, housing, and brake pads have a limited shelf life and need to be replaced periodically or the bike won't function properly, or you'll destroy the bearings in a hurry.

The Edco stuff could bring big money......but they have to be in real good, almost new condition to do so. Hope this is not the bike that had been on eBay for the longest time, as IIRC, that one had cracked cranks from what seems to be overtightening on the BB spindle.
So check your cranks just to make sure if it was not a problem that happened at the factory....

Still using crappy indoor photos too, featuring a "Suberbee Pro" derailleur.
