78 Schwinn Continental II

Not sure exactly what this bike would be worth, as I have found "experts" saying similar ones are worth nothing but sentimental value and others saying that they're worth a lot more. I know the bike is completely original and would need new tubes/tires and to be completely greased, but other than that I believe it may be a halfway decent ride for anything less than 10 miles. Serial number on the frame indicates it was manufactured in September of 1977 (JN XXXXXX serial number). I'm about 6'1 and have a above average wingspan/reach, so i figured this being a 24" would be a good size for me (the friends that I have that are my height all ride 23" so I figured this would be close.)

The gentleman selling the bike is trying to get $85 for it, but is that realistic/a good deal? (if it matters, this is in the Maryland area)

Considering the rust condition issues on the bike, the fact it is a low end Schwinn even $85 seems high. These don't don't do much better than $125-150 in excellent condition fully serviced.

Contis and Varsitys are pretty heavy for 10-speeds...35 to 40 lb. if memory serves. I'd look for something lighter.

@zukahn1 I thought it may be high so I was gonna try to talk him down some. Would it be worth more or less if I stripped the entire thing down and repainted it after I bought it? I have the time/space/tools to do it, and I was planning on taking it apart mostly to learn how everything works (haven't owned or worked on bikes but like to work on my cars myself so i figured this could be a learning experiment)
@bargainguy Yeah i think this is one of the heavier ones but I don't mind the weight. I'm sorta a bigger guy so it shouldn't be a huge deal, plus I'm not riding competitively, just around the city and maybe some shorter/mid length distance rides

That bike is worth $25 to $50 at most in the current condition. The same bike clean and rust-free might be worth up to $100-$150. Repainting it will reduce the value, and the current paint looks pretty good anyway. The headbadge should have a 4-digit number stamped which will confirm the day the bike was assembled.
