Ross bike. $80 on Cragslist

I bought this bike today because I assumed it was a steal. New crankset, pedals, brakes. But I know nothing about the frame and neither did the guy who sold it to me. Can anyone identify it and let me know what it's worth?

With the rash of recent bike thefts, The OP may literally be right.

Was it a mistake? I'm new to this. I'm not expecting to have stumbled upon some gem just want to know if it was worth my money as a commuter bike for a newbie.

Pretty much this. You got an operational bike, by the looks of it. For 80$, that's hard to do.

It's a pretty base level Ross, as most of them were. They made some very nice road bikes in the late seventies and early eighties, but this bike is not one of them, and likely prior to that date. Stay and dropout treatments are wrong. Looks like some version of their Gran Tour model, probably hi-ten steel. That's a guess; better photos would help.

Even the better Ross bikes (with one notable exception) are not worth that much; the brand has name recognition, but not in a good way. You didn't under or overpay.

$80 and it's ride-ready? Not such a bad deal.

My first bike was a Huffy... it's all uphill from there.

As others are hinting, the value of that bike is about what you paid. Ross was typically the entry level brand bike shops carried when folks didn't want to pay the price for a Raleigh or a Peugeot. True some the Signature road bikes were well made and sought after today. Yours is not a Signature. But that doesn't mean it's junk. Most folks here will gladly grab a ROss that's at a yard sale which can't be said for some other brands.

If everything works $80 is about what the bike is worth.
