Schwinn Peloton 853 Road Bike deal or not?

Schwinn Peloton 853 Road Bike for $500 in the Chicago area. Wish I could buy it for myself. Is it worth flipping? Looks bad ass but I don`t know enough about racing bikes. https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/bik/4099157194.html

I would think the frame itself was worth that much?

Steve, as a late 1990's bike, not really old enough to qualify as C & V. But ebay sales suggest there is no profit for you at the asking price.

Well it looks cool lol. I can only imagine how much the guy spent building that bike. Wish I had lots of cash floating around.

Thanks for the reply.

A good many of the enthusiast's here pay for their keeper trophy bikes by buying, reconditioning, and reselling bikes. Some members don't have the time for that, so another approach is to buy more expensive bikes, say over $300 and part them out.

In either case, you have to have the tools, work shop, storage space, and do your homework. I think I've bought close to two bikes a week this year. WRK101 may have me beat.

I bought a Peleton with Reynolds 853 3 years ago on ebay for $100 plus shipping. I wanted to try it. Built it with a mix of parts, 9 speed Tiagra shifters, Ultegra crank, 105. A nice rider but the top tube was just too long. Sold it for $375 and it took a good while.
I lost money on it. Lesson learned.

The Schwinn Catalog I looked at showed them in the mid 80`s. I had no idea this was a mid 90`s bike. I learn new thing all the time.

The name has been around since the 80s. Schwinn was under new ownership by the time the 853 Peletons came along.

Pretty decent bikes, regardless of era.

The late nineties 853 Pelotons had the same geometry as the same vintage 853 lugged Paramounts. The TIG-welded Peloton frame was imported from Asia, while the Paramounts were hand brazed by Match Cycles, Tim Isaacs' company in Washington state. Neither the Pelotons nor the Paramounts had "custom built Schwinn steel frame" as stated in the CL ad. The Paramounts and Pelotons rode essentially the same. They're nice bikes, but at $500 I don't think you'll make any money flipping it.
