"Vintage Eddy Merckx" on ebay - real or fake?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Eddy...E:B:SS:US:1123

Can anyone comment on this? I didn't think that the Merckx name was ever applied to fairly low end, touring-types of bicycles. The seller doesn't offer much in the way of pictures but I feel like this might be a basic bike with a Merckx sticker slapped on it. The 27" wheels and clamp-on downtube shifters are my biggest hang up.

Before the Merckx bike company was founded, Eddie sold naming rights to at least 2 established bike manufactures, Falcon in England and Dangre-Starnord in France. Some of these Eddie Merckx bikes were a “basic bike with a Merckx sticker slapped on it” and some were more mid-range.

I did a quick Google search of and “Eddie Merckx Falcon” and “Starnord Eddy Merckx” and the latter search turned up a couple photos with chain rings that sort of look like the one in the Ebay listing, but the paint/decals were different.

Great information. Confirms what I suspected about this bike probably being nothing special (certainly not almost $400 special). Thanks!

I believe this is a "real" Merckx, meaning someone didn't just slap the decals on some old junker. But 40 years ago, Falcon, or whoever, DID slap Merckx decals on a low end bike and sell a decent amount of them. So it's real, but not made by Eddy or Eddy's company.

Good call, this is a pass.

My guess is a real Merckx but of entry level quality, at best. The price is way too high, in any market, as far as I am concerned.

Eddy's company did not make "entry level" bikes ever. Falcon and Kessel did.
