1989 Centurion Ironman Master - 48cm

My wife is gonna try it out. If she doesn't like it, I'll probably sell/trade it. It's taking a lot for me to not strip it for it's components to put on my bike. Full Shimano 6400 series group. Needs some light polishing. There's a computer on it and I think one of the straps caused some browning on the chain stay... bummer. If she doesn't like it, how much do you think it's worth and what can I do to make it more attractive? |
Glad BF member got this one, I emailed on it. Well worth the CL price if this is that one. I would guess around $350-400 but I'm sure more knowledgeable guys will tell you better than I can. Nice catch

Bearings need to be re-greased and cables need to be replaced at minimum, before the bike is ridden. I see rusty cables and riding on 20 year old grease will destroy all the bearings.
Those Araya CTL-370 rims are sweet, they're some of the lightest clincher rims I've ever come across at about 380g on my scale. I also love the tri-color group as seen in my signature. Cleaned up, ready to ride, I agree $350 should be reasonable. Want to make it look better? Raise the saddle, angle the bars down a bit, and maybe put on some blackwall tires. I'm generally not a fan of tan sidewalls. |
they're vintage Panaracer wheels. Possibly original.
I'll replace the cables, no problem. which bearings should I be regreasing? BB, Headset? Axles too? I removed the vintage computer from it and polished the hubs clean. |
If it turns, regrease it, wheel bearing, BB, headset, pedals.

As suggested, if your wife prefers a Velouria like lovely bike mixte, I would overhaul it, slap a white origin8 aero saddle on it, vittorio zaffiro blackwalls, and list it for Mid 300's. Then find her a nice Lotus Mixte and put VO touring bars on it.

ok.
I wonder how much that'll run me. Seems like the previous owner kept it in good order. I don't see any 'leaky oil' stains around the BB or Headset like I did with my bike I don't have headset or bb tools. |

If that Lotus Excelle Mixte was closer I'd have bought it the day it was listed. It looks totally original and it's a popular color.
In my eyes, tan sidewalls look better on vintage bikes. All black tires look heavy and cheap to me, personal preference. |

Get some tools, they will pay for themselves by the second or third job. In 500 + bikes, I have yet to have found a single 25 year old bike where the bearings and grease did not need service. Left alone, you will eventually do damage to the bearing surfaces ($$). +1 No special headset tools required, but you will need a crank puller, bb tools, and cone wrenches. I just use marine grease, I buy a 1 pound tub of it at a nearby auto parts store for $4. Or pay 50% more than that for a 1/4 pound tube of Parks grease. +10 MTB craptastic saddle needs to go. While I am a huge gumwall fan, it depends on the bike and era. This one being late 1980s and a racing bike, I would go with blackwalls. +100 All of those mixtes are deals! The Lotus is the winner (+1 To Snydermann) I also haven't greased the BB or headset on my Sport DLX either... I was hoping to just replace the BB and headset with something nicer anyway. At this point, my wife doesn't want to ride it, so it's just going to go in my basement until she's ready. Probably next spring. That is, unless someone makes me an offer on it as-is. |
I would keep the bike. Centurion Ironman bikes are great. My 'Miami Vice' Ironman is probably the least valuable bike that I ride yet it is one of my favorites. I also have a Centurion LeMans which I am flipping and have owned a Super LeMans and Elite RS. All were nice bikes.
