1971 Raleigh Professional bicycle MKII limited edition

Hi All,

Can some one help me verify that this is a 1971 Raleigh Professional bicycle MKII limited edition? I bought it in 1978 and have ridden and loved it for many years, but now it's time to let it go. Everything on it is original except the saddle and the wheels. Any idea what it might be worth and where would be the best place to sell it?

Cheers!

Nice bike. Sell it on ebay. Have bike shop pack and ship it for you if you are unable to do it yourself. As for worth, you can post over in the appraisal thread and get some good feedback.

I not big Raleigh fan but this one is pretty and I love those high flange wheels.

Others will chime in about the value but I agree if your not accustome to selling bikes / packing / shipping bikes get a price from your local shop for that service.

Looks like it's in nice shape...the hubs look original to me, what isn't original? The tires? Rims? I'd say your average eBay selling price without a Brooks and without overhauling, with a good ad and quality photos (better than the ones you took here) from a seller with feed back is around 1000, maybe a bit less depending on what isn't original on the wheel and what you replaced it with. I'd also consider trying to sell it on the classic rendezvous list - or paying for a membership and selling it here. You might get a few dollars less, but you'll also save on fees and hassle.

I figured the wheels were rebuilt with the late '80s Campi rims on the original hubs. A pair of Paselas would really dress that up

Yep - that's it - I missed it in the photos. I'm going to stick to my numbers above - some buyers will prefer clinchers anyway.

The fork rake on these bikes is attractive. The bike appears in nice from the images, the modifications and lack of toe clips and straps suggest it was ridden casually and not often.
Images to help document this: close up of chainrings, lack of pedal scrapes, detail of typical great British Chrome, will go a long way to obtaining top value.
$1,000 is probably the target. Some will want tubulars, some will like the clinchers. Others will want clincher rims in a natural finish with gum wall tires... You cannot please everybody. If the original loose rims are kicking around, so much the better.
I don't know which way the Classic Rendezvous google group is leaning currently, they in its old guise of a mailing list swung from appreciation of these to casting them aside as not worthy due to their "production" origins, I did read recently that there may have been no more that 550 of these made that year.

Just double checked the fork leg image, that chrome may not be in terrific shape... there might be a discount for that.

IMO, replace the tires with Paselas and replace the bar tape with new (white?) tape, and it will look 100X better. Cool bike.

Put it on ebay with a $1200 buy it now or best offer and see what kind of offers you get. While the hints to dress up the bike may help get more money, ultimately it may cost you more money than you would have gained. Those items are a personal preference which the buyer may swap out right away. Raleigh Professionals like yours which are in nice shape sell themselves especially if you have good pics and a good ad. Again it depends on your ebay skills and feedback.

I'm talking about spending $40-$50 on tires and tape. Personally I think it's worth it, but maybe you're right.
