1988 schwinn prologue 58cm
I know this bike is underappreciated and not that common. One online BIN with pitting damage on tt cable guides. Hated to see that as otherwise looks great. Wonder how much discount for the damage. My experience is these guides rust fast on old steel bikes and are mostly cosmetic once sanded out/clearcoated. But obviously this affects value especially since the value is mostly frame. The middle guide is pretty rusty and paint/clearcoat is cracked.
So figure may wrk101 will give his opinion, easy to find the pics by looking at typical online sell site. Perhaps locally one could pick it up for 300-400 depending on damage and how motivated the seller is.
Actually after looking closer there is rust on headtube as well. Probably sat in a basement for a few years, sad to say. Doubt he will get a BIN in that condition. Still would probably offer 300 if local and just sand /clear coat the rust, then ride it as intended. In dreamer territory obviously but spring days do that.

hey thanks, as I figured. Good to know your top end value on even pristine condition example. Ebay is outlier but somebody sold the same model as smaller pristine frame only for 500 last month, another complete listed 775, sold BO but best offer never shows.
I have a great appreciation for 80s era high end japanese steel and have always wanted to find prologue but in 10 years have yet to see one offered locally. But thanks again.

Sadly, the top tube cable guides are the weak spot in the entire lineup of better Schwinn bikes of that era. Only proper fix is to remove all three and replace with brazed on ones, then repaint. The one in question has guides that are in VERY poor condition, not to mention an eclectic component group that does nothing to increase value. With the top tube guides like that, I'd also be concerned about the condition of the rims and spoke nipples. As a bare frame, it would still be a $500 project to bring it up to 'very nice' condition, including a competent respray/redecal job.
Pass.
Pass.

I've seen that bike and because of cosmetic issues, I would pass, unless it was super cheap. Its not....
$300 to $400 is a realistic price for one WITHOUT damage. Its really a great bike, but cosmetics matter A LOT.
I am a huge fan of the Prologue. I consider it the best ever imported Schwinn of that era, bar none.

Constant tinkerer
I don't think I could touch a Prologue for $300 here either, not that I've even seen one for sale ever. Heck I'd pay that for the frameset.

Well he is down to 420 plus dropped 55 of shipping, maybe he reads the forums! The pristine 1990 paramount w/ dura ace I was watching just closed at 675. I knew that one would go higher than 500. Spring dreamer, spring dreamer.

Keep looking. The last three Paramounts I bought were all purchased in July (although honestly, that one was a deal at $675).
After the feeding frenzy in the spring there are often deals available to those with cash in hand...
