1984 Specialized Allez SE appraisal

Hello everyone, So I'm fairly new to the bike world and i've been wanting a solid commuter for awhile. Ran into this ad on craigslist but the price seems steep, was wondering what you guys feel this particular bike would run.

Here's the specs:

Apparently it's the special edition Suntour Superb Pro with a double butted steel, lugged frame made by someone in the Miyata factory.

Condition is pristine with less than 200 logged miles on the drive train. It has Dura Ace aero brake levers and hand made Vredestein Ricorso Tires.

I don't know much about bikes so I was hoping to get some assistance before rushing into a buy, thanks for the time.

You mean this bike at $725 on the San Diego CL: 1984 Specialized Allez SE 60cm w/Suntour Superbe Pro

The bike looks beautiful and it is a really good bike. Heck it looks like a well kept garage queen and someone may really want it because it is so pristine and brings back memories of American Flyers, https://www.bikeforums.net/fifty-plus...-flyers-2.html. These bikes can command a good price but I wouldn't pay $725 for it. Plus it may not be the best choice for you as a commuter since it is a racing bike. You might want a bike that can take fatter tires, a rack, and costs a heck of a lot less.

Yeah that's the same bike.

I felt as if it may be a bit much, but there's a person for everything at every price. Like I said I'm fairly new, and a tad lost as to what I should be looking for. Don't mean to derail the thread or anything but can you recommend a place to start as far as what bikes i should keep my eyes pealed to?

Great bike considering vintage appeal to the right buyers it will likely sell for $700-800 to the right buyer. This is in no way a good choice for a commuter or even everyday bike it is a vintage racer. While cool as hell to own if you have the bucks and a half dozen bikes in your garage. If you have to ask this is not the bike you.

It's your thread so you can derail it all you want. Best deal for a used commuter is generally a vintage mtb. They don't command a premium like vintage road bikes sometimes do. The fat tires are good for commuting although you'll probably want to swap out to slicks. And they have eyelets for racks and maybe fenders (but those may not interest you in San Diego). I have no idea whether this is your size but something like this would make a fine commuter at $165:
