Legit Bridgestone RB-1 ???

Hi, I'm looking into purchasing a Bridgestone RB-1. What's strange is that it doesn't have a color scheme that matches any that I've seen before. Can somebody tell me if this bike is legit, or any info on how to properly confirm?

Thanks.

Bridgestone Rb-1 roadbike

If it were an RB-1, it would be worth north of the $200 asking price. Maybe the bike has been repainted; maybe the bike is a fake. It seems like a lot of bike though for $200. If it's your size, I'd check it out.

Yeah, I know. I'm gonna check it out tonight. Hoping it's solid. Seems good for the price.

It's not an RB-1.

looks like a nice, clean bike for 200$. Negotiate and make sure it fits.
Also this bike has lots of accesories: rearview mirror, frame pump, saddle bag, 2 bottle cages. It even comes with STI shifters! Rare for old bikes.

Not sure if it is a RB-1, but the frame definitely looks like steel, not aluminum.

No way to tell definitively that it is not an RB-1 without being able to see the frame details. Whatever it is it has been repainted.

Any word on this bike? I'm betting this is a legit RB-1 with a tasteless repaint. Silhouette, fork bend, and cable guides all look spot on for and RB-1, though we need to see the details to know for sure.

Ok, I picked it up. The bike is pretty clean. Not much rust. A little at the bottom bracket, but mostly just needs a bath. It definitely has a redone paint job, which is hideous, with some non original decals on it. Shimano ultegra components, shimano rims. It's solid and rides great. I'm pretty excited about it, even though I'm still not sure if it's an actual RB-1. Maybe somebody can confirm. Serial is "H922356".

Drop outs and seat cluster are indicative of an RB-1. I'll check my serial number tomorrow, but mine probably won't have a lot in common because it is newer than what your is, if yours is an RB.

I found this serial number decoder post from an old (2004) BOB mailing list thread

[start quote]

"Thanks to David Hallerman, who analyzed an earlier RB1 serial number
this way and
I saved it for you.

Assuming that serial number of H 724685 is correct, here's how that plays out:

H = made in August (8th letter, 8th month...skip "I" so "J" is September)

7 = made in 1987, which means it's a 1988 model year bike (every
BStone I've seen, and that's over 20, has a manufacturing year one
year before the model year)

24 = made on the 24th of that month

685 = the 685th of that model frame manufactured that month

Hope that helps,

David, who has probably sold as many or more Bridgestone frames and
bikes as he now owns

==========

Hope this helps
Terry

What is hideous about the paint? The quality of the job or your not into the color? If it fits well seems like you got a great deal.

I know I am late on this topic but I tend to lean more toward a home paint scheme and lousy decals on a real RB-1. I doubt people are counterfeiting RB-1 to make a little money. Now the $150 De Merckxs or the $300 Colmagio I saw posted the other day those I would be suspicious of!

Actually the paint job was done fairly well. I just hate how it looks. If that was the only issue I would just leave it as is and not worry about it. There is some mildly pitted rust underneath the bottom bracket. There's also a couple other minor spots on the frame. I got a quote on having it repainted and $300 for stripping it and repainting it for a $200 commuter sounds outrageous. I'm thinking now of trying to find somebody who can sand blast it for a reasonable price and paint the frame myself. I really don't mind it having a mediocre paint job, I just want to remove and prevent corrosion.

I would just touch up the bad spots. I find black is one of the easiest color to match.

A powder coat in one color usually costs around $100, including prep.

That sounds way more reasonable. I'll call around and look into it. Thanks for the idea.
