Lemond Buenos Aires frameset
Is it worth the $449 asking price?
Greg Lemond Buenos Aires Reynols Steel Frame Set Carbon Fork 53cm | eBay I have been looking for a steel road frame (new or used) that I can swap over my SRAM Apex groupset to. Preferably thread less fork, preferably 1 1/8 because I can use my existing stem. This frame set ticks all the boxes but it seems a little over priced but I wanted to get experts opinions? It's not mint, some blemishes that concern me. Is this worth the asking price? For comparison, I was in on bidding for a Bianchi TSX frame set that just ended yesterday and sold for $412.99 plus $49.99 shipping. The Bianchi looked as perfect condition wise as I could expect for a 20 year old bike and I believe it was a more expensive/higher end model new then the Lemond Bueneos Aires Bianchi Reparto Corse TSX Road Bike Frame Set 55cm Steel Carbon Fork 700c | eBay For about $400 I can also get a brand new Soma Smoothie frame which also has everything I am looking for but I would have to buy a headset for that. I already own a carbon fork that will fit the Soma so my all in cost on the Soma would probably be about the same as the asking for the Lemond |

It's pricey for just the frame/fork. Sold this complete bike to a friend last year for $550 after I reworked it except tires, about $50 less than what I'd sell to the public. |

Thanks, that's what I figured. The one you sold looks like it might be an older model? The one on ebay has threadless carbon fork and the one you had looks like threaded steel fork? I have seen some Buenos Aires completes sell for $600-800 in my research so I agree with your assessment. I think for $400 all in I would be more comfortable even thought I still think I may be overpaying at that price. Thanks |
Yep, steel fork. Mine was a '97 and that year the BA forks were cromoly; subsequent year forks were carbon. Same 853 frame, tho.

Any chance you could help me figure out what my bike is worth?

Upgrades can work against you sometimes because people like the upgrades but don't want to pay the extra cash above the standard components. So instead of luring them, it scares them away.
If it were me and I was trying to maximize profit, I'd remove the Campy ti post and ATAC pedals and sell them separately, then replace those with more modest components and sell the complete bike that way. I love steel but don't think much above $600, upgrades or no. |
Thank you so much for your input!! I appreciate it

$800 on Craigs List is a non-starter in most markets.
+1 Forget including shoes, those are worthless to 95% of the buyers out there. +1 In general, upgrades are free gifts to buyers. Ti rail saddle brings zero more when it is on a bike, etc. +1 Swap out that Campy seat post. Thanks so much for your replies. I've never been an avid rider - I bought the bike a few years back with full intention to ride more often. Truth is, I've moved so much in the last few years it's just been sitting in storage. I have another townie that I'm more inclined to ride and I'm very limited in storage space. You guys are awesome- thanks!! -Tish |
