Continental (not sure if its a Schwinn) Road Bike

Hi,

I am new member, noobie and I have recently purchased a vintage road bike, it was imported from France but I'm not too sure of the age. Unfortunately some one has painted over the original paintwork so I don't really know what it is, It has a brass Continental head badge so I am not sure whether its a different kind of schwinn badge or something completely different. If anyone has any knowledge of this bike please do tell! As I no idea about vintage road bikes.

Also the saddle is a CLUB leather saddle, does anyone know anything about these?

I was thinking about making it a fixie project can anyone tell me if thats a good idea or if its rare and to restore to original condition

Thanks

Alex

I am not sure what it is I don't think making it a fixie is a good idea.

This is something you don't see everyday.

Definitely not a Schwinn. Looks to be a late 60's imported lightweight, entry level. Both the brakes and the brake levers are somewhat rare, but probably not too valuable. All steel componentry indicates an entry level bike, very nice fenders! Looks like a great rider/commuter bike!

Thanks for replying,

Is the 'The something you don't see everyday' a good thing? are these brakes rare?

I also wouldn't make it into a fixie if everything works I would clean up and service it and ride leave it as 5speed should make a nice commuter pretty much as is.

Okay yeah maybe I will leave it as is. One quick question that maybe one of you may be able to help, I am in the process of removing the crank section but both myself and the bike are stuck! I have removed one side of the crank but the other side wont budge. It is a cottered crank, this is the first time I have ever stripped a bike. Although I am loving doing it this bike has annoyed me, I reckon there is a really easy way of doing this but I clearly don't know it yet haha!

I've tried giving it a pull but didn't work, I didn't give it a really big pull as I didn't want to break it!

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

The way in which the rear brake mounts is very unusual.

Try putting the BB (the bearing assembly) back together and reinstalling the other arm. then carefully put some weight on both cranks and try and get the stuck one to move.

It's much cooler as-is and has way more "street cred". You're about 10 years too late to jump on the "single-speed craze". Only kids in middle school ride those anymore.

Nice pickup, post some more pics when you get it cleaned up.

If the stem (part that connects the handle bar to the frame ) is aluminum (magnet won't stick to it) it might be a death stem. Google "AVA Death Stem" for more info, or remove from frame and post pictures here. If it is steel, don't worry about it.
