need help with this Miyata Alumicross

hi again and yes - my search for an old vintage bike found this from my local CL ad...

miyata alumicross (made in japan)

please check it out and hope you can provide some helpful comments re: spec / history info / value...etc

thanks again ....

ps - I forgot to mention that the 'gear shift' was at the end of the drop down handle bar(see picture) ...
is this common / factory build ? or 'custom' after market add on ?

The shifters were very likely from the factory. This dates to around '89/90 and is of course a Cyclocross bike. It would make an excellent 'all rounder' or Gravel Grinder.

I know Toronto is hot market so while I would try and haggle I think the price seems OK. I womder why the seller has 150 in the title but then ask 230 for it with a free used $40 pump? $150 is good but I would pass if there is any hijinks about it being 230.

My guess is that the bike was originally $200, pump $40 value, originally selling for $230/both. Seller probably knocked the price down from $200 to $150 but forgot the original bike + pump price.

thanks bianchigirll - hope 'factory shifter' at the end of handle bar is a good thing ? and easy to fix if there is anything wrong with it ? (ie: I noticed during my test ride - I can only shift only between the 2 larger front chain rings, (right terminology?)

yes - bargainguy's comment is right on the 'money' - so to speak.... :-) I can't explain it better than his words .... thx ...

ok - I called and am going over and see it again ... with cash this time ....
Gravel Grinder ? LOL ... - is it a good or bad thing ? ... :-)
however - I did notice during my last test ride that the bike was light, and there were some comments about this bike from this forum a few years ago and sounds like this is a solid bike .... so I think it may be good for my sons... or for myself around town... and with that color and 'Gravel Grinder' reputation, I may not have to worry about it being stolen like I do with my Bianchi if I parked it more than 5 minutes outside the mall/grocery store !!

thanks folks ...

Miyata alu bikes are nice rides - I had an Omnium for awhile. Not particularly common, tho.

I wouldn't leave it unlocked on the premise that folks won't recognize it. Lotsa bikies know Miyata well tho perhaps not their alu frames. I particularly like the bar-end shifters. You got a great deal.

The barends were common on 'cross and touring bikes before 'brifter' type shifters came along.

am happy to report that I went and talked / haggled / negotiated with the seller that I got the bike AND the PUMP for $130...
guess he gave me a break when I informed him that I'm a newly retired person with a limited income...
will post some pics after I clean it up ... I did fixed the gear shift so that all 3 x 6 are now working flawlessly !!!
thanks folks for your comments ...

any suggestion on how to protect the paint on the tubes ?
(I am thinking of wrap it with a white 'plastic shower curtain rod' protector ?)
