Hey guys ..earlier I posted two vintage road bikes that I found on craiglists...however one was taken already and the other didn't fit well so I head down to my LBS and they had budget used vintage bikes and I found one that fit well for me..so he told me 150 but its negotiable so is this a good bike for commuting to college and for fun.. or is it too old and a red flag? (background info is that in a college student that wants a road bike without being too expensive cuz the chances of it being stolen is a bit high in my college so if it does happen I don't want a huge loss)

Is this a shop that sells new bikes and few used bikes or shop that sells only used bikes.

Personally I say no. I would not let the person who pronounced this safe to sell put air in my tires. The front brake lever is canted at an awkard position and the safety lever may strike the handlebar preventing the brake from functioning correctly. The rear tire, atleast to me looks old and dry rotted, they could have used a few more zip ties on those derailleur cables.

I don't know exactly what your cash flow is like but compared to that thing you would be better off buying a bike at walmart and then having a real bike shop tune it up.

Personally, I wouldn't pay $150 for that bike, or even in that ballpark. For one thing, it's a department store bike, built with low quality components to meet a price point. It probably didn't cost $150 when it was brand new. Secondly, like Bianchigirll already mentioned, the brake levers are an indicator that this bike wasn't carefully serviced or inspected. Third, old bikes that haven't been maintained are going to need some mechanical TLC. This one happens to have a cottered crankset, which can be difficult to work on unless you've got a cotter press, access to replacement cotters, files, and some expertise.

I think you've got the right idea about looking for a reliable used bike, but one that won't break your heart if it gets stolen. You can do a LOT better than this one, though.
