1961 schwinn varsity

Hi everyone , looking for thought,s on a 1961 coppertone schwinn varsity english racer type of bike, gold rapping on handle bars ,black seat ,all original, about a 7 or 8 out of 10 , not much to make it look new, stored indoors ,but to me it seems these bike,s have not the same value as some older schwinn,s, anyway bike can be had for $80.00, maybe i should pass on this ,garage is getting crowded

If it has original components it should be well worth that price. Unfortunately the term "all original" is often used very loosely so I'd have to see pictures to say much more.

If it is truly original then condition will dictate value. To assess that I'd need to see pictures, the more the better!

Not worth more than $80 in my town regardless of condition. For that specific of answer need actual condition and location.

thanks bnb , suburb of detroit ,and that is my thinking too, i am no bike expert but this style seems to not have much value compared to other old schwinn crusiers or sting ray bikes, what this has going for it is the original condition and the owner states it is the 1st year the varsity was made as a 10 speed and he is the original owner , bought it when he was 14 now he is 67

Schwinns enjoy a nostalgia premium (sell for more than comparable bikes component/frame/weight wise). If I wanted one, its worth it. If I had a full garage and middling interest, I would pass. Would someone pay $80 or even more for a nice one? Absolutely. How much more? I would need to see pics and know your marketing skill.

Myself, I had a Varsity back in the 1960s. I also had a Chevy Vega in the early 1970s. I have no interest in having either one of them again.

Sure, old cruisers and Sting Rays bring more, those can bring silly money.

If it really is a '61 Varsity and actually still has all original components, then I've seen the Simplex "suicide" rod shifters alone sell for far more than the asking price of the bike. That year it could have been sold as an 8 or a 10-speed, and the Simplex or Huret rear derailleurs, freewheels, spoke protectors, etc. are also highly sought after. The original Ideale leather saddle (if present) would be worth a lot as well.

But without any evidence I highly doubt it is "all original", so few are. In fact I doubt it is a 1961 model, since Coppertone wasn't offered on the Varsity until 1963. Without pics to verify the model, the year, originality and condition, there is no real value to assign.
