'80 Lotus Challenger for $50

This bike just turned up on CL. It's my size, but its appeal to me is a a learning project.

The price is right--$50.00.

Looks to be in fairly rough shape to me--the picture of the front fork scares me, but it might just be rust??

I found a Lotus website and working from there I think this is a 1987 bike. Seems to be a mid-level bike. My uneducated guess is that it might be worth only $175-200 if all fixed up.

Just trying to gain more knowledge and thanks for any input.

I would pass , there are better ones out there in that price range . You want a nice , rust free frame to start out with .

If you are looking to flip a bike of that level that cost $50, things will really have to go your way. To get that up to snuff will take $50 at the very least for consumables and more if wheels, bottom bracket, headset, etc. are bad. Now you are into it for at least $100. You will probably have to work on it for at least 5 hours which makes your labor worth $15-$20 per hour based on a sale price of $175-$200. Again, this is a best case scenario so you need to decide if it's worth it to you.

Thanks for the input. Overall the bike just doesn't appeal to me other than as a project, so I think I'll just keep scouting around for something that grabs me a little more.

Thanks for the input. One more brick in bike-knowledge wall.
