Found a Hawthorne Hercules in trash, what is this thing worth?

Hello,

First off let me just say I know nothing about bikes, and I'm not really a cyclist, but I can appreciate something vintage when I see it, and I think I may have found something here.

Today on lunch I walked out and seen an old bike in the bed one of my co-workers truck, he's a scrapper and had just garbage picked it and was heading to the scrap yard after work. I asked him if I could have it, bought him a 6 pack for payment, and the bike is now mine. Here's a description of what I can see on it:

Hawthorne Hercules
Color is black
Made in England
3 speed with a "Sturmey Archer" shifter on the right handlebar
It has what looks like an old flip up child seat on the back, this appears like it might be aftermarket, but it looks as old or older than the bike itself
Bike is in fair-good condition, no rust, no big dings or anything, wheels don't seem bent, etc.

Some quick online searching brought me here, and I thought maybe some pros could help me out. I would really like to pinpoint the year, model, and history of it since I think It is pretty cool. I'll try to upload pics later if at all possible, but I'm working 2 jobs and in the middle of selling/buying a house so time is limited (hence why I cant research this on my own).

I really look forward to learning more about the bike, as well as its value. Thank you in advance for your time.

Hawthorne bikes were the house brand under the old Montgomery Wards department stores. Though it may not be a hot collectible it certainly is a slice of Americana.

...so far, it's worth the price of that six pack.

While it seems unfair that something so obviously old and still in relatively good shape should not have some collector value,
a Wards bicycle, even one made in England for Wards with a fine, bombproof SA 3speed hub, has little value to a collector.

It is a very functional around town bicycle, assuming you get it to the point where everything is working.

So the majority of its value is as essential bicycle transportation in a very functional package. Whatever that's worth in your town.
