McLean frame questions

So, I've had this frame for a while and really enjoyed riding it but its just too small for me no matter how I try and build it out. I picked it up on trade a few years not knowing anything about the builder but have since found all the info out there that there is to find other than comps. Anyone have thoughts on the fair market value of the frameset? It has the standard scratches and scuffs for its age' plus a few of the Reynolds decals have started to "melt" but overall really nice bike.

Thanks for any help!

Well this is not the correct place on BF to ask a value.

Down the electronic hall at classicrendezvous you might find a keen audience, the mast of that group, Dale Brown knows much about them and the late builder.

Cool bike! What size? You could look at comps for other respected US builders of the era and then add 10% since he didn't make many and passed away in his prime. Would love to have one someday....

A McLean is in my top three most wanted framesets.

This one is a beauty and someone would be quite fortunate to acquire it.

After looking for six years, I recently found one.

I am diligently saving for it.

Right on, thanks. I see it's already been moved...I must have came in the wrong door and did not see the main page!

The frame is actually 22.5" C-C both seat tube and top tube. I'm not the owner listed on the serial chart website, I'm the owner after him but I never sent in my info to change the chart. It came to me as a frameset only so I have no other original parts to help with value.
It a nice frame and always received compliments when I would get out on a ride with others.
Not sure how it works around here...but what are your thoughts on value? I can always provide more photos if that's necessary.

IMHO, with regard to value this one is a tough call. There is the bike itself, which was made by an artisan with a passion for his art. The builder's tragic demise adds to the value in that his hands will never braze another one. It is obvious that his frames are highly sought after as evidenced within this thread.

If it were my bike, I would negotiate with others on this forum that have been looking for one and that want to build it up and ride it. You could certainly make more by selling it at auction on ebay, but here you have an opportunity to fulfill two desires. The desire of someone who has dreamed of owning one and the desire of the builder who wanted his frames to be loved and ridden, not collected or hung on a wall.

Just my opinion and I am not in the market. But I hope you take these thoughts into consideration.

If not here you could easily sell it on the CRlist, it's founder (dale) knew Mclean and sold his frames. I would guess maybe ~$800-900 for the frame and another ~$3-400 for complete bike.

I have seen them trade for much less. In general they escalate in value when an active discussion on the CR list (old version) gets rolling then retreat for a spell.

I've seen several sell on the CR list for around what I quoted, plus one on ebay. I wouldn't sell mine for less.

It isn't just on CR though. There is a group of fellows that I ride with that place a premium on these bikes.

They have some of the nicer classics in this area and spend almost zero time on boards.

They develop lists of builders that demonstrate certain stylistic elements in their craft.

Some of these fellows list a McLean as a must have and I would say I am in that group as well.

The problem then is finding one that fits. It isn't a money issue for me, it's a supply issue.

The dollars mentioned here seem reasonable, but I wouldn't worry about paying a little more for the right one.

Okay, I guess I will place it in the same bin as I would like to find a Cuevas in my size. They are out there I am sure, but no opportunity so far.

Great stuff. Thanks again all. I'll check over at the CR list and see if there is interest.
