I have found an interesting bike & I'm discussing acquiring it from the present owner. It's an '87 Peugeot PX10, frame in good condition with the type of nicks & wear on the top tube stripes you might expect from a bike that has been used, but not abused. Currently, it is lacking a seatpost, saddle & the front wheel has an incorrect rim (tubulars...chances are I'd be rebuilding with tasteful clinchers anyway, but for completeness & value it's a factor, right?), but otherwise has the full original Mavic group in what apparently is good working order. Has been broken down & rebuilt anticipating riding, but still no cables. No hoods, has a good scuff on at least one of the original Mavic non-aero levers. That's about it. The last PX10s are Columbus SLX, which makes it the kind of nice riding, interesting, and a bit unusual (these days) type of bike I enjoy. And, further, it's not perfect, so it's also the kind of bike I can enjoy and appreciate as a very nice rider vs. a museum piece I need to worry about.

I've seen a few sold and a few for sale and it appears that in perfect condition they sell for around $1500. I could imagine people buy them for any price between zero and that all the time, but I'm hoping to get some feedback on what would be fair for both of us (buyer/seller) if this were to work out. Since I also have a CY10FC and a slightly older Super Vitus 980 Peugeot, this would be a very cool bike to add to the mix.

With all the parts it needs, I wouldn't pay more than $350 - $400 and that's if it fits and the frame is in nice shape. Should be a good riding frame, but you're still several hundred bucks away from a complete bike.

I'm not sure where you're getting that $1500 number, but I STRONGLY doubt it. I'd consider this on the low end of SLX desirability, though the Mavic parts have some value. In pristine shape, ready to ride, I'd guestimate value at maybe $600ish (I think that's very optomistic actually) in a local sale. If one of these went for over $800 on ebay i'd be quite surprised. I think you'd be SERIOUSLY over paying if you're cracking four figures on an 80s Peugeot.

Personally...without being ready to ride, cables, etc...I really doubt I'd offer over $300.

Just did a quick check on ebay solds, One in France slightly over 1000, all the rest well south of that. 400-500 depending on condition and state of disrepair, maybe less. You know, no photos, no prices.

The parts list doesn't seem that long or atypical. The first four items are almost automatic on any bike; I consider an unscuffed saddle a bonus. Only the last two are extras.

There's a 1986 PX10 on ebay @ $1500 BIN, but no recent solds support that price.

If you want it as a rider/project, IMHO, top value would be $450 +/-. After all, Peugeot is still an in demand marque for many.

$1500 sounds really (unrealistically) high to me too. But I also can't agree with the $300-$400 offers some suggest, even in its condition. SLX frames tend to sell for that much alone on ebay.

The mavic bits is what really adds to its value. From what I've seen, that stuff tends to sell for quite a penny.

Thanks. I need to redo my search. I have some photos that were sent to me and I will see if I can add them in a bit. The one I'm considering isn't 1500, but it's not 300 either. My thinking was that 5-600 may be on the generous side of fair, but maybe it's swayed by my terrible blind spot (& soft spot) for French stuff.

Really dependent on condition.

I bought a (very) cosmetically challenged one for my son last year. It was missing the original Mavic derailleurs. The owner wasn't a bike geek or a serious rider anymore, but he knew what he had. Can't recall exactly what I paid (not being coy, really can't remember) but think it was around $150. I thought that was a fair price.

But the same model in nearly perfect condition, with the full Mavic group (note the seatpost was not Mavic), could be parted out for $800+ plus shipping. Check eBay completed auctions prices for Mavic components: hubs, brakes, crank, derailleurs, shifters, headset, bottom bracket, stem, bars. Plus the frame of course. Then deduct some for eBay fees. But Mavic components have to look really good to sell well. Anything scraped or gouged is not worth much. The levers, for example, sound valueless.

So, somewhere between $150 and $800 . . . Need pictures to narrow it down . . .

Note the headset requires a special wrench, or a clever workaround. So does the bottom bracket, I think.

For rims, my son's PX wears Mavic MA40, one original and one from my bin. Looks good, matches the era and bike.

This would be a long distance but not fleabay or CL sort of thing. Interesting input. Practically speaking, the presence of cables is rather meaningless to me, but rideable vs not is a market value consideration. It appears complete less correct front rim & seat post/saddle. My rough thinking was along the lines of 300 for frame and 300 for parts...perhaps more for parts. Even if I have no intention of doing so, the value as liquidated parts at the highest market level (ie, meticulously parted out on fleabay), provides a data point. So perhaps if I can have it for a price that I could recoup if absolutely necessary, that is tolerable on many days. Maybe...I did notice Mavic groups get much respect on EBay...no idea if that will remain true in the future.

You're asking for market valuations and a price we think is fair to seller and buyer. If it's worth more to you, and it clearly is based on your comments, that's absolutely fine. I've overpaid for bikes and parts on occasion...I work hard to be able to do that. You're right - parts value is higher than these valuations, but that's usually the case. Bikes are rarely worth the sum of their parts when sold complete, especially when they're projects.

If it speaks to you, go for it. If you pay more than our valuations, so what. In the scheme of things no valuation judges its value to you, but I think it's helpful to have a sense of market as well.

I think most of us have, I know I have. If it's a bike we really want, we are usually inclined to pay more than we probably should. But if we can afford it and it makes us happy, why not.

Right on & put probably more succinctly than I put it. Basically, in the great scheme of things it works out. I have some amazingly nice bikes that were either really inexpensive (as a whole or to build) as a matter of being lucky or the right place at the right time or were sold cheap from friends because they knew I'd actually take care of the bike & ride it or even given to me for the same reason...so, it's hard to get too bent out of shape if one does speak to me and it's a bit outside what I'd like to spend. That said, I'm pretty practical, so I'm not buying $500 Schwinn Continentals either! I would never ask anyone on the 'net what to spend, but I feel like this group collectively has a realistic finger on the pulse of what people would and have spent on a lot of the kind of bikes I have interest in. (surprisingly, in most cases, so do I so I don't ask here often...)

Anyway, here are some more photos. Other than some decal failure and lever scrape, everything looks to be in a bit better condition than I remembered.

I wasn't expecting it to be that clean. $600 seems reasonable. I LOVE those Mavic bits, and they look unused.

That looks pretty good. Frame is just a $50 decal set and a bit of touch up paint away from pretty much perfect. But there is no good picture of the fork, hopefully the chrome is in good shape. The components are good, some (crank, stem, hubs, bar) look really nice, others (rear derailleur, brakes, shifters) have little scrapes and rusty hardware that will make them not "top dollar" sales. Levers are pretty worthless, but with sandpaper and metal polish you can have them looking nice, and then you'd need to recreate the "Mavic" lettering. Try to get the original Mavic pedals if they are available. I'd buy that for $600 and feel good about it, if I was looking for a PX. And these bikes are not common, so I'd go a little higher and still feel okay.

oh...it does have the correct pedals (which I would keep, but in truth would probably not use) . I thought there was a fork pic, but I guess not. I had one & it is clean - no rust, decals intact.

I bet a set of Mavic 640 pedals in good shape would fetch nice money. They are not common.

I've been looking for an SLX or 531P Peugeot for a long, long time. Decals are clear coated over so they can't easily be replaced.

I'd pay up to $600-ish for that bike as it sits just because the Mavic parts have a lot of inherent value. Frame and fork alone is worth $250-400. I've seem similar frames go for good money.

P.S. Peugeot made Columbus SLX frames through 1996/7.

Thank you everyone for your input, thoughts & feedback on this. Looks like this one will be back on the road soon, which is cool. This was one that was sort of on my outer orbit tier of my list, but all things considered it looks like it will be fun. Nice to come across something where I need to do some research....
