WTB: Small (52cm TT) frame or bike, of sport-touring or vintage racer variety

Getting the vintage bug again, and have been gathering some interesting spare parts. I'd like to build a road bike to make my 44 mile one-way commute more enjoyable. I've been riding it on my modern CX bike, but it's not great on the windy descents and I really miss the feeling of a steel road bike.

Requirements:

- Steel
- Top tube no longer than 52.5cm

Preferences:

- Columbus SL or thereabouts
- No repaints
- Tire clearance, the more the better

Budget:

- $400ish if it's a very nice frame. Less if it's not. I don't expect anything cosmetically pristine in that price range btw.

I'll pack it better this time.:) Tri-A model, F/F, paint in vg condition and as funky as a Land Shark.

Not a Nishiki fan, not sure why.

wrk101 has a promising Paramount, but it's a bit more than I wanted to spend.

Anyone have other possibilities?

oddjob2 04-29-15 05:25 AM

I am not fond of the brand name, Nishiki, nor Univega for that matter.

Another ebay choice. Trek 660 Frame and Fork Reynolds 531 Tubing 52 Centimeter | eBay

You might even be able to do pickup, although it is a bit of a drive.

Oops, never mind. Didn't notice the long tube top.

Thought I had found one, turns out I haven't. Still looking for something.

squirtdad 05-13-15 11:45 PM

did you see these two 49 may be too small

$$$ on this on were more than you want, but bigbossman has a really good rep (doesn't post much anymore) that the bike is nice http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...ive-train.html

http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...cm-lemond.html (notes 49, but talks about measuring 52)

Have a 93 Waterford built Paramount with 753 Reynolds. It's currently built up with a mixture of Sram Red and Force and Thomson post and stem. I also have a 94 Cannondale H400 that's built up quite nicely. I'm 5'5" so this is right around the frame size that all my bikes are.

romperrr 05-16-15 09:04 AM

I have a 52cm Super Sport frame set with Columbus Tenax tubes, late 80's I believe. If you want to get fancy, I can include most of a 7/8-speed dura ace group with a 7sp mavic wheelset. PM me with your thoughts, price, etc. I'll try to post pictures of it soon.

PBC peugeot 05-16-15 09:46 AM

I have a late 60's vintage Reynolds 531 Carlton frame I believe is a 21"
and a mid 70's vintage Vitus tubing Motobecane also 21"
if you like I will pull them out and get some pics

Gartenmeister 05-18-15 08:22 PM

Are you still looking?

I'll sell you this (frame, fork, headset):

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...2/P1060738.JPG

It is a gorgeous frame in excellent condition. Handmade in Italy, Bilato Brothers. For some reason I think it is SLX but not sure. It is a tad large, 51 seat tube C-C, 53 top tube, C-C. Also, no rack mounts or anything....not sure if that works with your commute.

clubman 05-18-15 09:03 PM

What about this hard core classic. http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...-titanium.html
